Obviously couldn't replace Carroll due to the time he was sold and Ba is partially replacing him however we have had all summer to find the centre back we needed before Carroll was sold (well we had the whole winter window too). When the arabs bought Man City they signed Robinho more or less the day they took over in the last few days of the window.
