RVP is massively overrated.

Like 80 goals in his last 110 in all competitions. Scores against the big sides. Can take free kicks, penalties and corners and still overrated...

What exactly would he have to do?

I really don't think he's overrated at all, one of the best strikers in the world when he's fit and playing every game.  Was unreal the last 2 seasons before this one.

He's never done it in Europe or in major international tournaments

Neither have many others who get classed in that bracket.  His main problems have generally been injuries and not playing for a real "top" side until recently.

if you rate him as the best player in the world, ever, then you're right. if you think he was very good quality, high class international forward who scores goals in any company then I don't think thats going over the top at all.

however I do think he is at the start of a very rapid decline.

This stage last year Van Persie had scored 14 , including the winners against Liverpool and City away and goals in an away win at Chelsea and a home win at Arsenal.

Were people raving as much about Van Persie last year as they are about Suarez this year? A fit RVP is still the better player IMO and will make the difference in a title race.

So what? Suarez is doing just dandy in absolute terms. I get the impression you're just hunting around for comparisons so you can try to make him look relatively bad.

If Suarez starts doing it against the big sides then Liverpool will be right up there.

Agreed.

But, I'm afraid he's just as likely to start biting again :(

This is true.... majority of what most would consider top level strikers over last few years have performed poorly at CL level especially.

Benzema and Rooney are probably the only ones who have been consistent numbers wise in that competition.

RVP was one of the best strikers in his position in last few years, whether he comes back to that level is entirely up to him and whether his body will allow it.

Depends what you mean by overall ability.... better dribblers? sure but there's plenty of things he has in his locker above them or did last season and previous seasons.

Also i think some have forgotten how good of general player RVP was before that was coached out of him to turn him into poacher he is today.

Aguero and Suarez never had the range of passing and vision that RVP had 2-3 years ago.

I tend to agree with Madras that he might be ready for a steep decline soon, but lets not forget the player RVP was.

His technique, passing, vision, movement etc etc was as good as anything in this league if not better..... Suarez and Aguero have never been able to pick out some of the passes he used to, some of the volleys he used to smash in the top corner and they never left defenders for death with such subtle movement..... hell the man's superb movement made Alex Song look like a through ball specialist for a while

This might be still in RVP but i'm skeptical to assume it as he's had injuries.

A 9 has never truly shined under Moyes so far in his managerial career. Even Rooneys spent a lot of this year in the number 10 position.

Rooney is a 10.

I'm not so sure, he's clearly not the most good looking guy. Classing him as a 9 or a 10 when men like David Beckham walks around out there is just silly. More like a 4 or a 5 tbh.

  • 1 month later...

Because people don't like to see it:

Remember when we finished miles above them and they were s*** and in disarray?

Amazing what spending a bit of money on a couple of strikers can do eh?
