He seems to have been told to cross more instead of trying to beat everyone and cut it back and it's working. He is a good crosser, he just isn't keen on it, same with shooting. I remember him popping in a number of great crosses with both feet on his debut in a friendly against Valencia. Very frustrating but he finally seems to working to improve that area. Should be taking the corners every time tbh, especially if Guthrie's off the field, Barton's are atrocious.

Just went absolutely wild fist pumping towards the bench. Looked demented, obviously meant a lot to him

Dancing Jonás Gutiérrez makes a point of Newcastle's fighting spirit

It was Gutiérrez who changed the direction of the game, providing a perfect cross from the left for substitute Ameobi to pull back a goal before sending over the corner from the right which Andy Carroll headed into the path of the unmarked Coloccini.

That brought a wild celebration from Newcastle's captain in the absence of the injured Kevin Nolan, although it was his fellow Argentine's screaming, groin pointing dance in front of the home bench that caught the eye.

"I was just pointing out that, in Argentina, we are strong, that we have big balls," Gutiérrez said.

He is such a frustrating player when you're supporting the opposition. You know what's coming - run, run, ground, free kick. He "wins" free kicks shall we say. I still think he's a limited player but you have to keep him on, he'll help out Enrique to close off Walcott.

Apart from the winning the free kick, I agree, he has been poor. But he's a player who is going to win you freekicks, he will take pressure of the team with his runs- Hopefully he will just step up his game after half time

It's the usual product for me that was the issue. He was faffing around on the ball for too long, getting caught in possession and generally not making great choices when on the ball. Still important to the team as a whole, but not his best day.

Aye, first half he was generally shite, but was defensively ok. Second half he cut out the fannying around and had a decent half.

He must be annoying for opposition managers. They must go into every game knowing he's not particularly a goal threat so wanting to concentrate on Barton's crossing from the right, trying to deal with Tiote in midfield, watching Nolan's runs from deep and coping with our big two up front. But then they realise they need to double up on him otherwise he would tear the right back to shreds as well as having to watch out for his link up play with Enrique. He's a massive part of how we play.

He's great in that he's very, very reliable. Never going to be a liability to you, he'll work hard and put in his shift defensively and never stop looking to get involved.

Love the way we play these days, every last man on the pitch gives his all.

Been a while since we had that, it's great having a team you can be proud of out there.

Would love to see what this XI could do with a Bellamyesque sort of striker on the pitch instead of Shola. Harsh on Shola to say because he's been good, but someone with that touch of real class and pace playing off Carroll would cause all sorts of problems in this team.

Ben Arfa would have been ideal for this imo.
