Wullie
When we play teams who actually try to attack us we deal with it well and exploit the space that's created by their attacking play. When we come up against teams who pack the defence and midfield and sit 10 men behind the ball we really struggle to break them down. It's why we needed a player like Ben Arfa this season, someone who could create something out of nothing. If we'd scored first tonight, forcing Blackburn to come and attack us it would have created the space that we need to play football. Them scoring first just allowed that fat cunt to let his side sit back and hit us on the break. Until we can find another player like Ben Arfa we're always going to struggle against teams like Blackburn and Stoke. In a nutshell. When there's no space, we have absolutely no cutting edge. Wullie
Real football teams will come to SJP and lose. Nothing to get in a state about. Big Sam had a right go at some Toon fans near the dug out just before half time. Anti-football really does sum them up, but Big Sam will call it tactics. Every 'foul' they won they stayed on the ground for 10 minutes to kill what little tempo to the game we had created. Disgrace. It's been the same for years - Villa, Everton, Spurs, even Arsenal, regularly come up here and go away with a point at best. Stoke, Blackburn, Hull, Sheff Utd come up and set up camp in their own penalty area and we just can't break them down.

Wullie
Its irritating that we cant just do normal defeats. Tonight has been served with a Tiote suspension, potential media frenzy over Barton acting the idiot again and more frothing at the mouth over our poor home form. What a bag of shite. The Tiote suspension is a good thing, we'll have him back for the games we'll need him for. He was never going to last more than another game without a card and I wouldn't fancy going up against Chelsea or to the Reebok without him.

Karjala
4mins in a Blackburn players are rolling about on the floor after every challenge. Not once in 90mins do i remember an nufc player doing. How come the ref's arent human enough to pick up on this?
Ryan_Taylor
So, out of tonight, Williamson and Tiote looked shaky and Barton's going to get a 3 game ban. Beautiful

Not sure Stoke would open up against anyone, they've only got one gameplan and it involves throw ins, as many of them as possible. They've no will to play football. Dave
Just been watching Football First and apart from the obvious (gifting them two goals) the result certainly looks a deadly combination of us lacking real urgency and it just being one of those games where nothing comes off. The first could possibly be attributed to fatigue in comparison to our opponents, and the second is testament to the type of football teams like Blackburn play. As long as they spoil what you're doing they're happy. No excuses though, not good enough on the whole.

Wullie
It was the right thing to do to go with the same XI but in hindsight, Blackburn were the worst side for us to play. We certainly didn't play long ball stuff in the last three games but what we did do was bully the opposition in each game and put fear into their centre halves. Never going to manage that against Fat Sam's ogres.

Would have worked mind if it wasn't for those two terrible errors. I agree with you though, the Barton --> Carroll ball is a good weapon but if it's our actual gameplan, we're going to struggle. We looked clueless from the off, it was a very flat showing from the team and the crowd. A little bit "after the Lord Mayor's show" I guess but just not doing what we've been good at recently. Very reminiscent of many home games in the Souness/Roeder/Allardyce era, the crowd and the team are very very rarely up for these games. Maybe it's because we expect to beat them, years of being spoiled at home under Keegan/Robson maybe.

I noticed that there was a hell of a lot of space in front of Blackburn's back four on regular occasions but nobody even attempted to exploit it. Our movement is woeful which doesn't help either. Ridman
I was actually screaming at the Hughton by the 60 minute mark to take off Nolan and bring on Routhledge then shift Barton to the centre. Shit game but in the end we did little to deserve 3 points, at least we can make up for it in 3 days.

Until we can find another player like Ben Arfa we're always going to struggle against teams like Blackburn and Stoke. It's not just you. Spurs are the same too. Main thing is, we're missing the Carroll (or possibly Defoe) and you're missing the VDV. There are a handful of teams who perform better when they're gung-ho but leave gaps (Spurs, Newcastle, Blackpool, a bit of West Brom) and a few teams who keep it tight and look for a goal on the break or a mistake/set piece (Sunderland, Stoke, Wigan, Blackburn, Wolves, Birmingham). Then there are teams that can mix it up more - sitting back away against good teams but capable of playing good football going forward when asked (Villa, Everton, a bit of Bolton, Man City). Then there's the good stuff......and Liverpool.

SGSC
Results like this arn't the end of the world, but they are so damn frustrating. We need to have backup plans to deal with the horrid tactics teams like Stoke and Blackburn bring here.
cubaricho
Barton's shove was hardly that bad. It was open handed, it wasn't even a punch. Pedersen has made a meal of it though. Overall, what a tired performance from our boys today. So many little mistakes all over the pitch which I'll chalk down to just being mentally tired. We needed to freshen the team up for this match and it has cost us. Really just poor performances all over the park today. Next match.
Tsunami
I had nearly forgotten how much I dislike Fat Sam and that brand of football. It was worse than Stoke.
