Dear xxxxx

It has been a few months since I last wrote to you and a lot has changed at the club.

We were near to the end of the season and it was a difficult moment for us. In my letter, I asked you to continue your fantastic support for the team. I thought it was very important for the squad at that time.

Against West Ham in May, you went to the stadium very positively. It was amazing to feel the atmosphere inside the stadium. It was a big help for us and we wanted to thank you on the pitch.

It is important to know that you cannot change everything in one season. I think in years you can change things, but this season looks very different.

With a new head coach, new staff, new players, young players with ambition and new ideas, we are looking forward. It is good for the atmosphere in the changing room and we are excited to know what will happen this season.

The head coach was a big part of me staying here. He wanted me here to be part of the squad. The club wanted me to be a part of the ‘new’ Newcastle United that they are building.  I am proud of that because I’m very happy here.

There has been a lot of speculation about my future in the summer but from the first time I met the club to talk, I said to them my first choice was here at Newcastle United. It’s true there were a few offers to the club. I don’t speak too much with the press so maybe it confuses things and people can say things about my future.

But my future is here. I have been here seven years and I feel a part of this club and a part of this city.

I know there was speculation about the captaincy also. The head coach has made the choice for me to wear the armband again and it’s fantastic news for me. If he said he thinks someone else is better, that’s no problem. We have to think of the team. It is part of football.

But captaining the team is a very important responsibility and is very special for me. I came here to another country and didn’t know the language. Everything was new. But everyone here – and you, the fans – made me feel part of the family here and I am proud to be a part of it still.

After the summer, it has been positive for me to be back on the pitch and to help the team. I felt my Achilles in pre-season and could not play games. Now, it’s ok so I trained for a week and played the game and I feel fit.

Against Southampton, we did many things well as a team. We worked together against a good team and I think it was a good day for us. We want to keep going and to learn the things we need to develop and improve.

Now we go to Swansea looking to win. Swansea playing well is not something new. They have done that for a few seasons. It will be tough for us there but we have a lot of things in our head that we want to do this season and to achieve them, we have to get points away. We have to fight for that.

Every season, there are new expectations and new dreams. We know we start from zero and I hope for you, for the players and for the staff – for the whole club – that we can have a good season and can make you proud of our team.

Thank you for your support.

Fabricio Coloccini

I can't believe that actually happened

The guy actually turned up with a grotty piece of A4 to show that Colo had written the letter.

It was a complete shambles. If we had kept Carver in any capacity ... just urgh.

Really annoys me that we extended his deal and made him captain.

Shite partner for Mbemba and with our lack of height in CM we really could do with real size in defence.

Should have let him follow his buttbuddy to Palace and inflict his moribund career on them instead.

this is what i can't let go, how badly has mclaren fucked up here?  he'd not even seen colo play for him and goes and does this, i could understand letting him run his contract down, maybe, if there was no interest from palace but in extending and making him captain he's more or less sealed one CB spot for 2 years fitness permitting and he's sealed it with someone who is no longer capable at this level

again i'll repeat, i'm sure this decision has nothing to do with the fact he's on the board and knows they won't spend big on the defender(s) he wants without getting rid of the likes of williamson and colo, which would appear to be impossible if we attach any value to them

Bang on. Another year wouldn't be so bad if he was to be third choice, but first choice and captain is a big mistake.

Yes, please drop this cun# now! He is costing us a goal a game at the moment and is carrying over his bad momentum from last year. We desperately need some height in defence and heading skills, Stevie T has this and I think I can put up with his fisty pumps and the rest more than i can a melancholic Colo!

I cant stand the look of his long, sad face any more. Fucking fuck off! Why do we extend the contract of an aging, depressed, badly declining player who does not want to even be here? Just another disgraceful decision by the club.

For McLaren; this will make his job much, much harder. We are now stuck With a useless shit of a CB for the next two seasons. No way we will invest any time soon, unless we are in danger of relegation. McLaren really shot himself in the foot here. The whole thing is sickening really.

Mbemba has been by far our best defender and he had no PL experience, means fuck all tbh. We just need someone who is actually good with CL experience and we'll be fine. Also i'd rather invest in someone who will be quality in 5 years time instead of overpaying for some scrub just because he's played in England who we'd need to replace when we realize he's crap.

Classic short term knee jerk reaction, rather than actual long term planning which has plagued the club for god knows how long.

Possession isn't going to make a teams defensive organisation or individuals any better.

Our 2 biggest defeats last year. Was it Leicester & Soton? Wasn't the result of incessant pressure. Just woeful, woeful, defending from the team.

and how was our attacking play, ball retention, passing through midfield, getting behind their defence to worry them etc. in those games oh wise one?

why are you making out like it's not all linked?

of i course i agree that we're littered with examples of rank bad defending and s*** defenders who were badly organised, but why can't you just accept that an improved possession and passing game with real attacking intent might relieve the pressure on a defence through them not having to defend their box incessantly every f***ing game?

Just digging this up. We've been better with possession and passing than under Pardew. Still can't defend a lick as a team or individually and hence... we suck at defending point blank.

Honestly, I think I'm ready for Taylor to get his chance alongside Mbemba.

Taylor cares more than Colo does and will at least try and give a physical challenge. Not to mention being far better in the air. Mbemba should also hopefully hide or make up for some of his flaws.

Colo is really pissing me off.

Taylor's not the answer either, but it would be interesting to see if it would make us any better defending in the air. So far just about the whole back four have been responsible for conceding goals to headers and we are only two games in.
