Aston Villa 1 - 1 Newcastle United - 17/09/11 - post-match reaction from page 42

Recommended Posts

TBH, the biggest difference between Monday and today was the opposition. Villa had a powder puff midfield, we had plenty of time and space, but we didn't see them off.

The passing through the midfield still isn't quick or confident enough. We often seemed to pass the ball out of promising situations just in order to keep possession. In Marveaux and Ben Arfa we have the players who can change that though.

Krul 6.5 - Didn't have much to do but looked good bar a couple of miscommunications wit ST.

Simpson 6.5 - Did nothing well

Saylor 5 - Worst game in a while for him. Hopefully it keeps him on the ground and he works harder.

Colo 8 - Covered well for Saylor. The man is made of something stronger than tungsten.

Raylor 5 - Zero end product poor set pieces.

Obertan 4.5 - Got round his man well a few times but then managed to be completely pathetic. Such a shame a few years back he looked great.

Tiote 7.5 - Got the cross in for Best's goal and was defensively solid.

Cabaye 9 - Absolute freak of nature how he didn't score. Was awesome.

Jonas 5 - So frustrating. If he could shoot and cross he would be one of the best wingers in the world.

Ba 7.0 - Solid game showed his value as a target man. The goals will come.

Best 7.5 - To be honest in terms for goals to transfer fee one of the best signings of recent times from any EPL team especially when you compare to players like Beckford and Chopra.

Marv 7 - Won himself a starting spot in his cameo imo.

Shola 5 - Did nothing.

Sammy - 5.5 No time to do anything but he looks promising.

Cabaye hits the ball with such force - every strike is just murdered with that right foot.

Think Best was carrying a knock, that's why Shola came on with predictable effect.

Pardew talked ad nauseam in the preseason about building a team that's able retain possession away from home and fair play to him, this team did exactly that.  Most assured away performance in a long time.

Guys.  Just how good is our defence really?

Without sounding too negative, Villa were gash today and they hardly had a sniff at goal, thanks to better play from us but against better teams it could have been 2.0 down, good job bent is shit.

I think this was the first game we got to see how Pardew see's this team, Shame it's taken until the 5th game to see it but hey were unbeaten.

I was worried at the start that playing the way we did we were susceptible to the counter and that proved the case with the goal but the rest of the game they defended fairly well.

But we finally saw the possession and pace on the wings play that Pardew had talked about in pre-season and except for abit of fortune with some of our chances we should have won.

--------Tiote

Marv---------Jonas

-------Cabaye

--------HBA

--------------Best/Ba

Then during ACN:

------Gosling

Marv---------Jonas

-------Cabaye

--------HBA

--------------Best

Swap Jonas and Marv as you will with Santon's style of play we probably need Jonas as insurance on the left though.

To be honest that looks a lot stronger than I thought we would after we signed Ba. With the opportunity to bring in new players as well when the ACN rolls round we could be looking at a mid table finish this season.

Very happy with that display, can't help but feel a little disappointed with a point after that performance, but I'd definitely have taken one before the game. Given MotM, he's all that came between us and the three points, closely followed by Cabaye who was exceptional today.

I dont understand the Jonas love. Bloke has no finishing or passing skill what so ever. Can get past his man but has to be one of the most frustrating players in the world.

His work rate is second to non..

Let me clarify. As an overall addition to the team he is great but in terms of attacking he is as bad if not worse than Obertan.

A hundred times better than Monday night, gutted not to take three points in the end but a really well earned point and finally a decent attacking performance.

Wullie's most optimistic post of 2011.

good days on NO man

Pleased with that, a nice surprise. Still areas to work on but that'll always be the case. According to Pardew before this game, if we could avoid defeat today there's a real chance to go unbeaten for another 5 or 6 games and to be fair, he has a point. However knowing this club we'll lose at Forest on Tuesday and then fail to beat Blackburn on Saturday.

Jonas cannot cross the ball to save his life.  Christ.  How difficult is it?!

Quite, when he's had to play LB and LW all game long.

Guffaw.  He has *never* been able to cross the ball.  It's just not a part of his game.

I'll take that. Possession says we should have won but we didn't create clear chances. Well WE didn't but CABAYE did.

Couple of pints, offy, then train. Howay!
