Rangers thing makes absolute sense imo. Aaaaand, they're Direct Spots colours as well. Imagine Ibrox plastered in that SD shite...mmmm, lovely.

So with the Premier League income about to shoot up, he decides that now is a good time to sell, and buy a near bankrupt club in a league that attracts very little attention.

Yeah, makes sense.

Speculation...Mort and Llambias always said they buy struggling companies, turn them round and then flog them.  They stopped the "rot"  the market has picked up, the UK economy is turning round.  The current financial deal for the prem is eye watering...The next tv deal could be massive with players like BT, Google and Sky battling it out.

Perfect time to strike a profit and start again with a club with a big global image and push them into the champions league with little investment.

Yeah, makes sense.

he could buy rangers for very little comparitively and be in the champs league within a couple of years and all the riches that brings. don't know if even with projected TV money rising down here if he'd make a profit on selling us. fairly sure he'd get out if he could break even on us though.

It makes absolute sense to buy a team that's at its lowest stock ever, that is guaranteed to have a solid fan base forever, and inevitably going to be back in the top tier very soon.

It doesn't really make that much sense to flog NUFC though, unless he's in receipt of a stupid offer.

Yeah, makes sense.

Makes sense in that Rangers have almost 100% better chance of getting CL consistently that Newcasyle would. The money gained thru CL tv rights and the exposure for SD means it makes absolute sense

The big bucks in the CL are in the later stages. Celtic and Rangers are unlikely to even clear the 1st group stage.

Exposure-wise, nothing beats the PL in showcasing his brand to a worldwide audience. 38 PL matches vs the SPL plus 6 CL matches, the answer is obvious.

Rangers have global support though. Their merchandising possibilities are beyond ours (unless we become more successful) and the operating costs would be smaller (players wages, fees).

If he sold us at the same amount he put into us then bought Rangers, he would have earned more profit within 3-5 years with Rangers then he ever did with us.

That said this comes from unfamiliar source and the article just looks at a hypothetical situation based on what other people have interoperated to possibly happen.

Rangers need a lot of subsidy to compete as well don't they though? Like how they went bust last time.

And also, selling us is going to be a very slow process, presumably if it was easy to find a buyer Mike would have snapped their hand off already.

I don't see how their merchandising/advertising potential is bigger than ours. A couple of CL group games every season, which most people ignore.

I guess it depends on the Champions League develops in the next few years.  There is lots of talk about a European Super League which some experts really believe will be a reality sooner rather than later and whilst it might not seem likely Rangers would be part of that, they are more likely candidates than we are.

I heard on the radio the other day when it was suggested Ashley might want to take over that there is some regulation in Scotland where he cannot own more than 10% of Rangers if he owns a Premier League club so he would definitely have to sell us if he plans to buy Rangers.

How is the Champions League less of a showcase to a worldwide audience than the Premiership? Am I missing something here?

Because they always get knocked out instantly? And they're one of the less interesting clubs involved. The PL is a global phenomenon all season long.

How is the Champions League less of a showcase to a worldwide audience than the Premiership? Am I missing something here?

The Premier League is broadcast in 212 territories around the world, working with 80 different broadcasters.

The TV audience for Premier League games is 4.7bn, and the number of homes reached last season increased 11 per cent to 643m. In total, the League clocked up 185,000 hours of TV coverage in 2010/11, an increase of 65 per cent on the previous campaign.

Champs League, or any other league for that matter, won't hit those figures.

Surely that's an imbalanced comparison though? seeing as there is 38 games a season compared to the 15 games of the CL.

Context, Mole. How many games do you think Celtic/Rangers will have? 8's prob the norm, 2 if they can't clear the qualifiers.

Even in the wider sense and without the help of numbers, I doubt the average CL match will match the average PL match in global viewership.

Rangers and Celtic have been competing in the Champions League for many years, and they still can't compete financially with clubs in the Premiership. That's why they're desperate to leave the Scottish League.

What's going to change if Ashley takes over?
