Mike Ashley drafts in trusted and abrasive lieutenant to help run Newcastle United

Mike Ashley has drafted in Justin Barnes, one of his most powerful and abrasive lieutenants, to help run Newcastle United as he looks to attract outside investment.

Alan Barnes is a long-term associate of Ashley and the lawyer has been described as the sport shop billionaire’s “fixer” and “most reliable deal maker”. His appearance at St James’ Park has ruffled feathers as he looks to establish his influence over the decision-making.

The Daily Telegraph understands that Barnes has taken a keen interest in the business over the past few months and managing director Lee Charnley has been forced to run most large financial decisions past him before he has been allowed to act by Ashley.

Barnes has helped Ashley make a series of acquisitions for Sports Direct and is part of his notoriously publicity-shy inner circle, but has never worked in football before.

Although Barnes is not employed by the club, he now has a huge say in how things are done and has also been given the task of trying to persuade potential investors to buy a stake in the club.

Ashley has contemplated selling up this summer after 10 years as owner, but an asking price of more than £400 million has scared off interested parties.

As revealed by The Telegraph this week, he is more interested in finding someone to buy a stake so that he can share the financial risk attached in trying to turn Newcastle into a major force in English football again.

A Newcastle source said that Barnes appears to be making sure that “all the ducks are in a row” so that if an investor is willing to put money in the deal can be done swiftly.Manager Rafael Benítez hopes to have at least four new signings in place before the start of pre-season training in July.

A deal for Chelsea teenager Tammy Abraham was close to completion weeks ago, but has still not been finalised, and other clubs, including Swansea City and Brighton, have also expressed an interest in the striker.

The transfer of Eibar midfielder Florian Lejeune has also failed to progress as expected.

Alan Barnes?

No wonder he's being such a tight bastard.

Oh boy.  Just what we need.  A Mike Ashley wingman with zero prior involvement in football.

Yep, sounds fucking great. "..managing director Lee Charnley has been forced to run most large financial decisions past him before he has been allowed to act by Ashley"

This sounds like Vetere/Jimenez all over again.

Aye, all going well, just let Rafa get on with it and everyone's happy Mike.  Nah instead he's going to piss about and bring some fucking nobody in to "establish his influence over the decision-making" in the hope of selling part of the club, fucking toss pot.

Here we go again. FFS.

Is the daft fat cunt completely incapable of following up one good decision (Rafa) with another?

He's absolutely fucking atrocious this bastard. Can't wait until he's gone and his cronies.

This spells trouble. He's clearly held up/kiboshed the deals for Tammy Abraham and Lejeune. Cunt.

Nailed on for Rafa to leak stuff to the press now. Watch this space for political fireworks over the next fortnight.

Could it be to do with the HMRC raids? Gets in his best lawyer to make sure everything is in order

No chance. He wants to pretty up the numbers ahead of investment. Just a matter of time until this Barnes prick gets above his station and falls out with Rafa and probably Penfold too.

Can never leave well alone can he the fat cunt?
