Wilson
Little things were pissing me off, like not giving a booking for the blocking of our quick free kick early doors...from a free kick which should have been also been a booking. I mean... I'm probably bias but so fuck.
duo
Didn't book Yamal so he can play the next game. Also played more additional time that came out of thin air to give Barca a chance to score. Edited March 11 by duo

geordie john
I really do think it's about time the club made a formal complaint to EUFA and the PL about specific incidents during a number of matches. Take the bastards to court if we have to, this cannot go on any longer!
Abacus
From the Times referring to the refereeing; Marco Guida, of Italy, and his team of officials had an all too familiar case of Barcelona blindness, and not just from the garish fluorescent shirts. Barcelona got away with a lot, Newcastle with very little. Fermín López very obviously pulled back Hall, making no attempt to play the ball. Had he been booked he would have missed the second leg; Guida took it in his stride. Later, Yamal would also take Hall out of the game, roughly. Again, no card. Yet when Sandro Tonali brought down Raphinha, he was booked.
Gottlob
While I'd never rule out corruption I think there is certainly an aspect where referees are wowed by top players and top teams. Someone like Yamal or Raphinha gets the ball and any foul is treated as a cynical attempt to stop a promising attack. If one of our players gets the ball and the same foul is committed, well they've just been knocked over and it's part of the rough and tumble of the game. The same sort of thing occurs when it comes to time wasting, where a few seconds suddenly become a major crime whenever a top team is chasing the game. And if we as the unfancied side were down to Barcelona or the game was otherwise petering out, the referee might not have allowed those extra seconds last night. Danh1
There’s not a chance the ref wasn’t aware that booking their players that he didn’t would’ve ruled them out of the return leg. It is corruption. Hopefully one day it’s looked into and there’s hard evidence, and this bent bastards throws himself in front of a train.

It's not organized corruption or anything as sinister as that, but the refs definitely err of the side of "big" and we routinely get shafted by it. That's why I was delighted when VAR came in because we suddenly started getting way more pens than we used to. Every time a ref's selective blindness kicks in real time there is a chance to go back and fix it now where it was just one of those things back in the day. "These things even out over the season" my arse

Agreed, as Gottlob says though I think it is more the case that refs inherently favour the "big" teams in any subjective 50-50 call as a matter of natural human bias. But even then I think back to the PSG penalty two years ago and can't help thinking of a few decisions that just didn't feel right, even whilst trying to leave aside my black and white specs. That PSG penalty is evidence of possible corruption imo. The fact they watched it back, from multiple angles, sped up, slowed down etc. In real time if it’s given fair enough, but the introduction of VAR has caused huge mistakes. Kid Icarus
Years ago it was exposed that refs were told to 'protect the brand'. It's not good for the brand, or viewing figures, or driving content if Barcelona lose or Yamal isn't playing. Everything always ends up coming back to fucking capitalism for me, but it's hard for it not to when it's so obviously the driving force behind the enshitification of everything in our lives. Wallsendmag
6 minutes ago, Robster said: Almost as if they're rewarding incompetence. Got to say I think the general standard of the refereeing in our CL games has been pretty good. Last night he was awful, PSG away awful, but other than that no complaints. In saying that a lot of my friends over in The Netherlands weren't happy with the refereeing in the NUFC v PSV game but I thought he was fine so that shows how people can see things differently. My issue with UEFA, and also the Premier League to a slightly lesser extent is that they've both made it abundantly clear that they want certain teams to be appearing in the latter stages of the competition in the CL, and up towards the top of the table in the PL. That instantly puts pressure on referees to favour these teams in the interests of their own careers and to make sure they are given the best appointments. The introduction of VAR has enabled them to borderline match fix games, as we seen in that PSG game a couple of seasons ago. Never a penalty in a million years, but the referee has been told to give it basically. PSG go through, we go out. From their POV it's worked a treat. The big worry from yesterday, and Gerry Armstrong picked it up on commentary on the channel I was watching it on, is that the referee appeared to be taking instructions through his headset and in some cases was making massively delayed decisions as he listened to what he was being told to do.
