FWIW I thought it should’ve been a penalty for Pope’s stupidity alone. Zero need for him to come 15 yards off his line for that. Daft keeping.

Agree on this, it shouldn't have a bearing on the decision but it was a very poor decision to come charging out in that situation. Anyway, at least he saved the penalty and we won 5-0.

How was it stupidity? He came he got his fist to the ball the ref was happy to not give a penalty.

Then var looked which is fair enough and decided they know better which is wrong as they can show dodgy replays to suit there argument. Which comes to the conclusion was it a massive error by the ref no it wasn't.

You get penalties for stupidity? Great, do we get a penalty for Eze's stupid penalty attempt?

I would like to see punitive punishments for rank idiocy, so I think we should’ve.

He's more than entitled to come and punch that man, it's a head height ball dropping in his box.

Maybe 'keepers need less protection' but you cannot just start making rules up 3/4 of the way through a season. They were playing the frame back repeatedly to see if there was a touch so it's pretty clear they fucked up dragging the ref to the monitor, then as we see time and time again he has to just go along with it.

If Guehi sprints 15 yards, skims the ball with minimal contact and flattens Isak, we're screaming penalty. Not sure why a keeper doing the same is fair game.

But if Guehi gets enough of the ball to redirect it's movement, which Pope does, you'd never get a penalty.

At the time I thought it was a daft charge out by Pope, but in no way thought it was a pen. The ref didn't, the players didn't. And even from the other end of the pitch it looked like he made contact with the ball.

Then the VAR review, taking an age. So first of all not a clear and obvious error. Then, the length of time it takes while you're in the middle of the pitch having someone mark your homework, with them having had the benefit of already watching it multiple times before you've got there.

It's going to take a brave ref to decide that they were right first time which is why it almost never happens. In which case, the whole pantomime of sending the ref to the pitch side monitor is completely pointless and just amounts to a public telling off.

But if you'd got the original decision right, which I think was the case here, and then change your mind after VAR intervenes to then come to the wrong decision, you just look like even more of a fool.

If a centre-back did that to a forward I doubt there'd be a debate.

I mean, you're right, but a centre back isn't expected to be challenging with his hands, so it's a bit different

For me, the fact is it wasn't a clear and obvious error. The ref already saw that Pope led with his fist and caught the player, he therefore didn't give the penalty because he thought he touched the ball. There's no way from the replays that you can conclusively say he didn't touch the ball; if anything the ball clearly deviates from its trajectory, therefore the on field decision shouldn't be overturned.

This place was would be up in arms if it was at the other end and not given.

TBF though mate that doesn’t mean it’s objectively a penalty, it means fans are partisan.

But if he gets the ball literally no one thinks it's a penalty and it's never given. What an utterly daft post

Totally agree with you on the clear and obvious. I think the accident is a penalty, but it can be arguee he touched the ball.  so I agree it is not a clear and obvious error, so no penalty. They really need to bin the clear and obvious, and sooner rather than later we need som AI VAR.

There's was no control of it though. Nothing in the laws say just because you touch the ball it's not a foul. It's not like he flicked the ball away.

Nah mate, you can break someone's neck as long as you get the ball.
