That said, I don't think he's completely ball greedy. There's been a few times where he had an opportunity to shoot and has instead looked for a pass to a team mate. A case of hopefully trying to pick the right option on a more consistent basis.

 

There's still not enough movement when he's on the ball, like. Infact that goes for the whole team, in the first half when we were playing the 4-4-1-1 the play was far too static with not enough movement and showing for the ball. Even when we did create opportunities it tended to be down to one of Jonas, Ben Arfa or Santon taking it upon themselves to try and force the play.

 

Once we went 4-4-2 we instantly looked more comfortable. Not that much of a problem when it works as I don't mind 4-4-2 but we're stuck in our ways tactically and it's a bit of a pain when we're thin on the ground in terms of centre forwards.

My chief worry about the 4-4-2 we use is when we come up against teams who have decent ball retaining 3 man midfields like Swansea whom we have the quality to beat we risk struggling. Equally we struggle against teams that are hyper defensive due to a lack of creativity in the final third. Our wings aren't generally good enough to make significant penetration, and so much of our forward threat comes centrally. If Tiote and Cabaye are nullified by a 3 man midfield we lose a lot of threat.

 

Hatem Ben Arfa has looked good in the no 10, remember a gorgeous little pass to Ba, but ultimately if he's playing with Ba (though suppose Ba may be gone this window) most midfielders will pick the pass to ba because he's going to hustle and bustle to get on the end of the pass more and will then probably immediately hit it into the net. On the wing Ben Arfa makes himself available easier and will find himself with space to run into. Much rather him on the wing.

Makes sense really. Tactics should be adjusted accordingly - say we're up against a 4-3-3, I'd play Ben Arfa in the number 10 so that he can try and dictate a passing game and ultimately dominate the midfield.

 

Though really in most games, he would be more of a threat from the wing. We saw on Saturday how much his influence grew in the game when he was moved out wide.

 

Mind you, the way I see it is that Ba and Ben Arfa can play together and develop an understanding. Ba anticipates things so well so I reckon in the long term, it'll be Ba-Ben Arfa as the main attacking force (provided Ba is with us beyond this season and next :)).

Like when he played with a Benzema Lyon or Marseille Mamadou Niang has

the two can make a killing

But to do that he must work the automation

itv getting a bashing off alan brazil on talk sport this morning over their lack of coverage of the ben arfa goal and the time spent discussing Ince's son

 

Good. The ITV coverage was shocking!

 

Everyone glossed over it TBF... even the radio hardly mentioned it. I suppose it was natural to focus on the late winner, but still, it was the kind of goal you don't see very often.

ALAN PARDEW is hoping that Hatem Ben Arfa’s immense self-belief can help the playmaker to get on a roll after his wonder goal against Blackburn Rovers.

 

The Frenchman is keeping his fingers crossed he gets the chance to step in once again for Demba Ba when Queens Park Rangers head for Tyneside this weekend.

 

But Pardew says that despite scoring one of the best goals ever seen at St James’ Park, he still wants more from the United No 10.

 

Reflecting on Ben Arfa’s contributions, Pardew told the Chronicle: “I think we saw all the sides of Hatem.

 

“There was some loose stuff – he was a bit cheap with the ball – and I’d have liked a bit more intensity out of him defensively.

 

“But there were some magical moments which no one else in our team can produce.”

 

Ben Arfa was handed no more than a substitute role through the festive period and frustratingly had to watch on during the best game of the season at St James’ when the champions Manchester United were trounced 3-0.

 

However, Pardew unleashed him against struggling Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup third round and the player responded with a superb sparkling performance.

 

Pardew gave an insight to Ben Arfa’s mood in the last fortnight.

 

The former Crystal Palace player said: “Every player has a different personality and character, and Hatem’s a very different personality to most footballers in terms of the way he believes in himself, and the ability that he has.

 

“It’s frustrating for him to have that sort of ability and not play because of other issues like his intensity when we haven’t got the ball and coming back from that injury.

 

“But we’re getting there. We’re trying to get the balance of the team right.”

 

Pardew must decide who to play on the right-hand side against Mark Hughes’ Rs. Gabriel Obertan started in that slot against Blackburn in the cup but was replaced after an under-whelming display.

 

Pardew also has the option playing Ryan Taylor in that role. But discussing Ben Arfa’s prospects as a winger, the position he netted his superb solo strike from, Pardew said: “When he came out on the right, it looked better for us.

 

“That doesn’t necessarily mean that’s him – he can play a number of roles.”

 

Come on Alan, you know it makes sense.

He's yet to prove to me he's a hell of a central player, he's hell of a winger, and should still get into the box where he can pass the ball superbly on wing, just so far his running doesn't work there. I wouldn't ask him to play as a wide winger and just hit big crosses into the box, though he should mix it up sometimes.

Cheap with the ball? Fuckin hell, if he thinks this, shouldn't he already have executed Obertan?

Exactly when I thought when I seen this! Ben Arfa at least looks like he's going to create something when he picks up the ball whereas with Obertan the only thing he's going to create is a fucking catastrophe by just giving the ball to the opposition every time.
