South Carolina doesn't have anything PA doesn't have like. ish. yeah the miles of beaches and seemingly infinite number of highly rated golf courses, plus good southern BBQ, has nothing on Mechanicsburg and Scranton. The Teams lad will return to St James’ Park for the first time since leaving United in January last year. Carroll was sold by the Magpies when Newcastle accepted a £35m bid from the Kop side – with the fee reinvested into the squad and the reason why Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse and Yohan Cabaye have helped United charge up to the Premier League’s top six. There was anger when Carroll was sold, but few can argue with the way things have turned out, with Europa League football a real possibility mainly due to the financial windfall United recouped after Big Andy’s sale to Anfield. Carroll, who picked up his first major honour by winning the Carling Cup this season, could not be happier. His return to the club has similarities to the sale of Les Ferdinand in 1997, when the one-time No 9 was sold to Spurs for business reasons despite having previously pledged his allegiance to Newcastle. The Geordie told the Chronicle in his only interview before the big game: “If I scored on Sunday then I wouldn’t celebrate. “I hope I get a good reception from the fans, they’ll be getting one from me. “I thought I did well for the club when I was there and loved it. “I have some great memories from playing there. “I have always had a good relationship with the Newcastle fans and it stems back to playing for them.” Carroll turned down the chance to leave the club after relegation in 2009, but wanted to help lead the Magpies back to the Premier League. His 19 goals in the Championship helped achieve that goal as the romped to the title. Carroll’s form proved the catalyst for a England call-up from Fabio Capello and joined the likes of United No 9s Alan Shearer and Jackie Milburn to pull on the England jersey. His 11 goals in the Premier League proved too much of a temptation for Liverpool, who paid over £35m for his services. While Carroll was linked with a move to Newcastle last January, the Geordie still enjoys an excellent relationship with players and staff alike. And Carroll said nothing will stop him being a proud Newcastle fan. He said: “I still love the club and have a lot of friends still at Newcastle. “I always want to see them doing well. “I want to do well for Liverpool of course. But when I come off the pitch playing for Liverpool, how Newcastle have got on is the first score I look for. “That will always be the case.
