Newcastle United vs. Stoke City - 21/04/2012 @ 3PM (Today)

Their football is dire to watch and kind of rank but it's not some offence against sporting philosophy, ffs. It's a game plan, you're allowed to have one.

For me it's as much the fact that they show no will to improve or play anything approaching decent football.  He's had quite a lot of money to spend and all he's done with it is bought big fellas who fit into his ugly football style.  No ambition to play anything other than battering ram style hoofball, no ambition to do anything other than stay in the premiership, no ambition to develop the club at all.

This. Pulis is just a mong, completely devoid of any tactical nous or any idea of how football should be played. His touchline instructions are probably the equivalent of when you played LMA Manager on the playstation and you only had 4 options 'attack, defend, shoot, clear it' although even that probably escapes him and the only thing he can actually say on the touchline or in his teamtalks is "get stuck into 'em, boys."

The big picture is that  in the area of player development we've fallen far behind the Germans, especially in the wake of Germany's self examination. A examination that was so far reaching, it stretched from the International 1st team to grassroots level, and inbetween. From top-to-bottom of the league great football is played in the Bundesliga, from a technical perspective.

The likes of Pulis & Allardyce are a stumbling block to the work put in at the grassroots level, and destroy the raw potential  produced in their relevant  catchment areas. For the country to bridge the current divide, clubs have to be on a similar page, re: employing a philosophy that is beneficial for domestic player development.  If clubs are relegated, amidst promoting managers who coach football which is actually educational, then the financial blow of relegation should be softened in the form of increased parachute payments (as a concrete policy). Clubs like Stoke, who simply get by and collect their slice of the TV  rights pie & are anti-thesis to the last point, should be whacked in the hip-pocket. Those  respective financial incentives (and disincentives)  will phase out this anti-football mentality, that has been  embraced by some managers and clubs who refuse to evolve. The Pulis' and Allardyces' of the domestic coaching scene (for the sake of the relevant player catchment areas) and the niche market they have created thanks to their survival-at-any-cost approach, have to be phased out of the game.

Wouldn't mind England playing the way Stoke did if we won international tournaments.

Seriously, it's ugly but to call it a crime etc is ridiculous.

Also, I don't think they're nothing but the battering ram approach. Some of their players can play.

Would take only slightly more than zero pleasure in winning a major tournament if we won it like stole do. It's so far from football man and it will never ever bring success. It can only get you so far and it's appalling to watch. Can't wait for stoke to get relegated. Tyson makes a great point, teams like stoke are holding back football development in this country

First post. Fantastic season and I think we're in with a real chance of the 4th spot and the champions league that accompanies that position. Win this and I will be crazily optimistic.

We need more than this win to get into CL.

It'll also be interesting to see the line up as Stoke is all physical and long balls.

I've commented on this elsewhere, but under Pulis' watch they'll never be relegated. Pulis' team is more structured and athletically gifted in comparison with Wimbledon, whose anti-football philosophy eventually caught up with them.

The TV rights pie, and the general volume of incoming revenues, will ensure that Pulis' will have just enough in the kitty - to attract a better calibre of athlete, which are suited to his smashmouth football. Stoke will always be better equipped, and they'll sneak up on just enough teams, acquiring the necessary amount of points along the way.

The first half of the campaign is key for them though, pre- Christmas that is. Their style of play, over the course of 50 games, must be physically and more importantly mentally taxing for the players. Having the art of anti-football drilled into you a few times a week would hardly be a satisfying workplace experience. A campaign over in Stoke must be a long & laborous one. Probably the longest in the top flight, and this isn't purely reflective on number of games played. It's down to the points I've alluded to.But a physically & mentally fresh Stoke outfit will at least lay down a solid foundation (points) pre-Christmas.

Got me tickets and train for this, looking forward to it. Probably the last game I can go to this season if Chelsea doesn't go to members.

Would like to see another HBA wonder goal, but failing that any sort of win will do. We can outplay these if we turn up and attack them on the deck.

If we beat them we are guaranteed 4th place for at least 2.5 hrs until Spurs go to QPR in the 17.30 kick off.

Just win!

It'd be quite nice to be front-runners for a bit. Spurs didn't cope too well with our Bolton win either ;D

All the pressure is on Spurs. A couple of months ago they were still being talked about as title contenders and if we beat Stoke they won't even be in a Champions League place when they play QPR.

Pardew comments on the break thing in this morning's Journal, saying that's why he's pulling the players in this weekend and gave them this week off instead, to try and buck the trend.

Good

Fucking hell, I want us to win this so bad. A win would be massive, anything but would be such a downer.

It's ok for big matches mate, that's about it.

Get's going if we score, or there's a good bit of play.

Strawberry corner, far by the best place in the whole ground for amtosphere and craic.
