International defender and captain of Montpellier, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is on the verge of joining Newcastle in the English Premier League, it was announced Monday at the club Herault. The 23-year-old is expected to sign a three and a half years for a transfer estimated eight million euros.

Yanga-Mbiwa will leave his former club with which he played 186 league (Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 combined), and won the title of champion of France in May. He had extended his contract this fall through 2015 in exchange for a release. Approached this summer by Arsenal and AC Milan, he had been vetoed by President Louis Nicollin .

 

"His departure likely not happen at the right time. However, we did not feel to push the transfer of six months when we had a moral agreement with him and that he had accepted a contract extension," said President Laurent Nicollin delegate in charge of recruitment.
