Alan Pardew says other Premier League clubs stay silent on same cup policy as Newcastle United

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew wants to win the cup but insists Premier League status is top priority

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew

Alan Pardew believes other Premier League clubs have the same outlook on the domestic cups, but choose to stay silent on the matter.

The Magpies have stated in the past that sides like Wigan and Birmingham have suffered as a result of a tilt at the cups with boths clubs relegated followed after winning the FA Cup and League Cup respectively.

Now Pardew has underlined that United’s aim will be maintaining Premier League status and building a team to push on in the top flight.

In the build-up to Newcastle’s trip to Gillingham in round two of the Capital One Cup, Pardew said: “Perhaps, at board level, we say what other boards don’t say in that the Premier League is the be all and end all because of the TV money, you cannot hide from that.”

And Pardew says that Newcastle will continue to prioritise the Premier League.

He added: “We’re not hiding from it, we’ve actually said it, perhaps to our detriment but we have said it, that is our priority.”

When asked if he would be having a genuine crack of winning the League Cup though Pardew said: “Of course we want to win a cup and our fans want to win a cup.”

Newcastle’s last effort in a domestic cup was the FA Cup third round against Cardiff City when a tame surrender resulted in another early exit.

Pardew said: “That’s our last cup game so we need to react to that and we need to get a win, so I’ll probably take the same 20 players that I took to Aston Villa to Gillingham.”

So i guess that's us out of cups for another year

He's right TBF, doesn't make it any nicer for the fans.

i find it interesting that he's almost managed to relegate us and produced one of the worst seasons in recent memory at the same time of being shat out of the cup by anyone that turns up on the day against us, year after year

something doesn't compute

If this c*** was on Mastermind he'd definitely pick casinos over football as his specialist subject, even though he's s*** at both.

I reckon he'd do ok. He wouldn't pass much.

If he was under pressure he'd forget to say pass and blurt out "HOOF!"

He's not right, our club should be able to go on a cup run without having to worry about relegation. If a cup run is going to relegate us then that's down to him.

I know they should, I mean he's right about the priorities of most PL clubs. I don't agree.

Wouldn't be quite as galling if we actually invested the tv money they so desperately crave. They get all this money from the new tv deal and do precisely fuck all with it. We make the league a priority so we can make money, not invest it. The only thing that benefits from the tv cash is the bank balance.

They're fucking arseholes, the lot of them.

We are happy to take the TV money yet contribute nothing to it. That money is so high because the league is exciting and therefore people want to pay to watch it, yet we insist on making every game as boring as possible in an attempt to scramble enough points to remain on the gravy train. We're footballing parasites.

If we were deep in a relegation battle in January then maybe prioritising the league makes sense.  If you know you are safe from relegation but unlikely to make Europe then at least a cup run gives the team something to focus on for the rest of the season.  It is unforgiveable to give up on a season in January like we did last year.

As I stated, most if not all clubs will prioritise the league over the cups but there is a lot of difference between doing that and commissioning research to show how middling clubs that do well in the cups get relegated afterwards. It's fucking pathetic, of all the things it's probably the thing that has narked me the most. Fucking cunts.

I agree with this.
