He has played a lot deeper since signing for Liverpool hasn't he?

His first season there was more AM but now he's just a ball winning/recycling CM, maybe to keep Salah and the fullbacks higher up the pitch. He still creates as much as Henderson, who sees more of the ball and makes many more passes, presumably as the go-to player who collects from the defence.

Some numbers you can play with, with Shelvey and Diame in for comparison.

Playing bread and butter CM in this way, and not just "ghost in and score but otherwise invisible" AM, suggests he is much more useful that he looked for us. For us, I think the goals he scored came from very few shots, famously all four in that Norwich game, so that level of production is unlikely to be repeated.

In 32 games he never misplaced a single pass last season?

Would have him back in a heartbeat tbh. He's genuine class, he may go missing a few times, but with Rafa at the helm i'm sure he'd be more involved.

Klopp couldn't so i'd have my doubts. Problem with him is he's best at making runs from midfield to score. He doesn't really put his foot on the ball and set the tempo which means he disappears a lot by nature.

If he isn't scoring he isn't doing anything else. Nothing at all. Really dislike his game so much.

Was a tremendous achievement shipping him to Liverpool for the money we did. Bigger scam than the Sissoko deal perhaps.

If he's being shipped out of Liverpool he's hardly been great for them has he. Us and a Turkish graveyard club the only ones interested? Says all you need to know. He was shite here and obviously hasn't pulled up any tree's for Liverpool. No thanks.

That's a great post apart from the fact that Liverpool don't want rid of him, he has asked them to leave for first team football.

He's improved a lot under Klopp. Think he'd improve us, played consistently for them last season.

Not so sure he's improved, just got back to his level after listening to Pardew explain the game and thinking 'wtf'.

Anyway, almost certainly a load of bollocks.

Never played for Pardew.

Can barely believe some of the comments in here. Guy was first choice midfield player for a WC semi finalist four years ago, was sold by us for 25m two years back, contested in a Champions League final barely two months ago and at 27 is just hitting his prime, yet some wouldn’t have him back on a free.

Rumour is nonsense of course, and he’s no world beater by any measure, but we’ll do very well to sign better players than him this summer imo.

He hasn't improved man.

Milner jumped him in midfield as did Ox when he came in.

There's a reason Klopp has gone and bought two central midfielders as soon as the season's ended.

This guy is not good.

Yeah. It's fine not to want him because of the circumstances last time, but to say he's shite is a different matter.

Wasn't he a fairly important player for Klopp? I suppose with Fabinho and Keita coming in, someone has to go and he's maybe decided it's Wijnaldum and Can. But a better team will sign him.

No he was not important man!

The midfield was Hendo, Milner and Ox.

He really only played when he first came in and then once he was sussed he only played when everyone else was injured.

This is killing me guys. He isn't good.

We played him at number 10 and he didn't produce. Tried him wide and he didn't produce, played him in central midfield and he didn't produce.

He never did anything.

If Rafa wants him back I'm all for it. I don't understand why so many people get upset by plauyers we're linked with. Surely if Rafa wants them that should be good enough for us?

Is the correct answer.
