Skeletor
Can't trust Ashley but I can't see ANY reason why you'd pick Graham Carr and a transfer policy over one of the best managers in the world. £££ That doesn't work, we've spent almost £80 million in 12 months and we'll be lucky to get half of that back now. Cheaper transfer policy or a manager that might make him spend more money? We know his form.

Scotty66
The comment about "not about the money" is huge. Rafa doesn't want 150m to spend on players but he wants the money spent on the right players, however much that may be. If he doesn't stay here as manager I think it's clear as day that the future for the club is very very dark. He wants to see the club are prepared to push the boat out and aim to be a success. Everything has failed for Ashley. This is his last chance to get it right and Rafa could really save his arse.
Ketsbaia
If Rafa stays, I'd actually be really excited about this club. We've just been relegated
LoveItIfWeBeatU
Upgrading the training ground, the wages of Rafa and his staff and the root and branch review of all areas of the club will all cost a lot less than the fee wasted on Thauvin. It's a massive job which needs to be done. Give the job to someone who is qualified and actually wants to do it.
Mole_Toonfan
Wouldn't be the first time a manager has said something the fanbase wants to hear so he doesn't get negative reactions when he decides to leave. Not saying that's what he's doing but him saying that doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things and it also doesn't mean that he's been f***ed over by the ownership either. Still don't think he'll stay but if he decides to then fair play because I wouldn't if I was him.

M4
The gulf in class between Rafa and Ashley is unimaginably huge. Among Ashley's many faults, one of the biggest is crushing the sense of community of the club and its connection to the city. Even aside any donations he makes, Rafa gets it. Scotty66
https://audioboom.com/boos/4565633-rafa-benitez-speaks-to-bbc-newcastle-pre-spurs Interesting him saying he was in talks with a Premier League club and then Real Madrid came along and snatched him. Memphis
I think it's worth it to have been relegated if it forces this group to give Rafa everything he needs to transform the entire operation. If he stays and professionalizes every aspect of the club, from the currently dismal youth setup, to training, to transfers -- and he will have demanded the remit to do just that -- then we could be in a position in a year's time where we are in far better shape top to bottom. If the club fucks this one up, well, that could be it for us, for a long, long time. We have been hanging on by a thread for years. The thread finally snapped. Now what will these geniuses come up with?

bhoywhonder
Media will desperately be trying to get him to leave. Already seeing all the 'Real Madrid to the Championship in one year' articles. I mean, it's true but I've heard so many sh*theads spout something along the lines of 'Barcelona to Burton Albion in 18 months haha lol bantz'. And it's always Burton Albion, which now is becoming a fixture i'm genuinely looking forward to. They are too it appears.... Newcastle is the big one for me. Villa may be ex European champions but Newcastle are on a different plane. Does that mean that the great Rafa will be standing on the touchline at the Pirelli?!!!!!!!!!!!! This is getting mildly ridiculous - it's like a silly dream. Is it just me? LoveItIfWeBeatU
“Whether it’s in the Championship or the Premier League a coach’s job doesn’t change too much. Winning trophies around the world and being in the Champions League is what you’re looking for, but I’ve already done these things. I decided to come here because I knew it could be a big challenge and could also be really important for my future.” That's one hell of a positive quote there. B-more Mag
How did talks on Thursday with Lee Charnley go? "Fine. We have a good relationship and he's professional and I am professional.... and we were analysing things that were wrong and things that we could do in a different way....so quite positive. Have you come to a decision about your future? "No, not really. What we said in this meeting is we will have more meetings. So, again it was very positive in terms of the things that we were discussing. "I can say to the fans that we will continue so obviously if I decide to come here it’s because I knew that was a massive club with massive support from the fans. "That was my impression when I came and I'm really flattered with the fans because it has been amazing. "I know they can be even more positive in the future but at the moment we have to be sure that we prepare the game for tomorrow properly and after we will try to do the best for everyone: for me, for the club, for the fans, for everyone here. Is this a big decision for you? "Obviously. I am professional and I have been in this business for a while no? I am the kind of manager that has achieved what I have achieved working very hard. I was not a famous star as a player so I needed to work very hard. "I have experienced two promotions with different clubs in Spain and I have experienced being relegated too....so I can understand that there are some people who say 'no he cannot stay', some people say 'he will do it'. "That is a situation where we have to be calm, we have to be sure. What I want is the same as the fans want. We want a successful team, we want a strong team to be promoted to the Premier League again as soon as possible and that is the situation now. "We have to talk, we will have more meetings and then we will see what happens. But if I am here and I am discussing these things, because obviously in my head it's a chance, it's a good chance and we have to keep talking. What sort of assurances would you be looking for? "I say before, it's like the fans - a strong team capable of being promoted quickly and to compete at the maximum level. "It's not a question of money, it's a question of if we have a structure that can allow the club in the next year and in the future years to be strong and competing in the Premier League hopefully. "I am happy to discuss all these things.....at the moment I am really pleased with the first conversation. I am really pleased with the people here - so the staff, players, directors - everyone here since I came has been fantastic. "I cannot say other things, than I want to be sure that if everything is fine. It has to be fine for me, but also for the club, for the fans, for everyone. When do you expect to come to a decision: "It's difficult to say, it depends on the conversation but I think that a couple of weeks could be a decent time. "In the meantime obviously we have a responsibility and we have been even working preparing the pre season and leaving everything ready for the next year. "So we cannot say yes and then not have time to move things in a professional way. So we are working as professionals and we are talking and I think that a couple of weeks maximum and we will have an idea." :fwap:
