I thought he'd already turned down the chance of an interview even before he confirmed he was staying??

Depends who you believe.

Numerous reports said he would be interested in speaking to Everton and Southampton whilst others said he wouldn't.

I'm actually in love with the man tbh the feeling I get in my stomach when I see things like this, or hear him talk I know it sounds gay as f*** but I actually love the man... I'm 22 years of age and for the first time since a daft Euro 04 poster, I've stuck a poster up in my wall (the one of him free with the programme on the last game of the season) and even when I was a kid I had very few posters up in my wall cus I thought they were cringey as f***... But he changes it i would genuinely let the man sleep with my girlfriend (don't think she'd be too keen though) genuinely the most excited I've been about a season since the summer of 07 and it's all down to that man I f***ing love him !!!!!

I'm down with the gay love and the swinging.  But a poster on your wall?  That's too far, FFS.

Don't remember this

The story of the European encounters between Liverpool and Chelsea can be told in many different ways, although most ardent fans would surely mention the famous Luis Garcia ‘goal’, still said by some people to be the goal that wasn’t (but also could have been a penalty and a red card for Cech immediately before the shot). That’s obvious. It’s the most famous and most memorable image. However, if you think of football as something more than the result and the scoreline, it is possible to tell the story through something other than the sporting action, but through a generous gesture, a romantic act by one of the main characters towards the fans. It is then that the narrative of this rivalry can take a different course. I will explain.

It happened in the semi-final of the 2006-7 Champions League. In the first leg, in London, the men from Stamford Bridge had put one foot in the final by winning 1-0, only a narrow advantage but seemingly unassailable. Because against a team created with a cheque-book, it is obvious you will have no chance and you will always lose. Maybe because of that, when Agger equalized we were not thinking about extra time and much less about sudden death from 12 yards. It’s amazing that we had only just equalized and yet we felt confident of doing anything. Including getting the second goal which would take us through to Athens. We were wrong, because at the end there was no change to the scoreline. Of course there was extra time and of course it went to penalties. And, sure, we suffered more than was necessary. But there was someone who would help us in the midst of our anguish.

Everything was set according to the football protocol at the time. Players linking arms in the centre circle in a line, the first penalty taker avoiding eye contact with the goalie (in the goal at the opposite end to the Kop) and the referee ready to give the go-ahead. And then, in the technical area by the bench, something special happened, something kind, which could only be done by great people. Something which was unexpected because we had never seen it before, but something, on the other hand, that is logical if you think about it. What happened was our coach, Rafa Benitez, sat down on the pitch as if he were a statue of Buddah. Spectators around the technical area watched the scene with a mixture of amusement and amazement, wondering why the coach had adopted such a pose at such a tricky time. Of course, when their doubts had been swept away, they could see clearly how our team had gone through, and while they were celebrating, they realised what had actually happened. Exactly this – no detail had been missed because Rafa, with his pose, had allowed them to enjoy an unrestricted view of proceedings. He had decided to sit down simply to give them a clear view of the pitch. How can it be that, on the point of an historic win, this bloke seemed almost more concerned about the enjoyment and welfare of the fans than the final score? On this occasion I have the answer immediately. Because he was and always will be one of us.

Sat in a Turkish theatre -- long story & at a boring bit -- read this and laughed out loud, in a very noticeable and noticed way. Nice one + curse and blessing of decent wifi!

Is that really why he sat down? Seems unlikely.

Rafa Benitez has explained his reasons for sitting cross-legged during Tuesday's penalty shoot-out.

The Spaniard's unusual pose caused quite a stir after the semi-final victory against Chelsea. However, the Reds boss today told liverpoolfc.tv that he decided to sit simply so the supporters could see.

The games between Liverpool and Chelsea at that time were dull as dishwater like.

I used to dislike Rafa's Liverpool nearly as much as the Chels back them like. Awful (and successful which makes it worse).

Newcastle to cool interest in French market as Rafa Benitez {lays rebuilds} recruitment system

Newcastle United are ready to cool their interest in the French market as they look to assemble a squad capable of enduring the rigours of the Sky Bet Championship.

United did not send scouts to many of the international friendly games during the build-up to Euro 2016, but while they aren’t abandoning signing players from abroad all together, Rafa Benitez is being as meticulous as ever when it comes to bringing in the right type of characters in what will be a well-contested Championship next term.

Benitez already has his spies and scouts stationed around the world, and it is believed that at Liverpool he once made it clear to his staff to continually update a list of the top 20 or so players in each country across Europe to stay ahead of the game.

But for Benitez and Newcastle it is all about the here and now - and finding players that can handle the intensity of the second tier of English football.

The Magpies have already adjusted their pre-season plans ahead of the 46-game marathon programme that lies in wait with Benitez preparing between five and seven friendly games this summer with the bulk of the fixtures taking place in the UK.

However, fans are eager to see what happens at St James’ Park this summer when it comes to recruitment.

Newcastle have been able to steal something of a march on clubs like Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers and Leeds United in the last few weeks with the trio of ex-Premier League clubs appointing Roberto Di Matteo, Owen Coyle and Garry Monk in recent days.

During that time, Benitez has been holding a thorough review of how Newcastle go about their business in the transfer market.

The Magpies have signed a host of players from Ligue 1 in recent years such as Moussa Sissoko, Massadio Haidara, Yoan Gouffran, Manu Riviere, Remy Cabella, Florian Thauvin and Henri Saivet.

But Saivet could be the last expensive arrival from the French league for some time as Benitez looks to find the right balance in his squad and bid for an instant return to the Premier League.

Benitez has already started to restructure the way Newcastle scout players and has rolled out his own contact book and methods to ensure no time is wasted in what is going to be a short summer break for United.

Chief scout Graham Carr and his recruitment team remain on the books at Newcastle despite talk that the Geordie talent spotter would quit after Benitez’s appointment.

Although, it is believed that Newcastle won’t be as reliant on scouting missions to France, and there will be more emphasis on bringing in younger hungry players from the UK that will be ready to hit the ground running in the Premier League if the Magpies achieve their aim of promotion at the first time of asking.

Newcastle are ready to offload Cabella and Thauvin while they will listen to offers for Riviere and Gouffran.

Yet it is understood that Newcastle are aiming to sell players rather than loan them out this summer unlike last term when Cabella and Thauvin were sent to Marseille on temporary deals.

January transfer flop Saivet would arguably welcome an escape back to France on loan but Newcastle would only consider selling the £35,000 per week midfielder who has made just four appearances since coming from Bordeaux earlier this year.

Saivet was highly recommended by Carr and pushed the way of ex-head coach Steve McClaren but has failed to impress after a reported £4.5million move to Tyneside.

Whether Saivet is ready to fight for his place when he returns for pre-season and do a job in the Championship remains to be seen.

But Saivet’s transfer is the ideal case in point for Newcastle and their recent transactions in the transfer market.

Benitez will be looking to avoid a repeat of such situations and is confident of some recruitment success after being handed full control of transfers.

When asked about the situation recently, Benitez said: “What I have is the conviction that I can tell the fans that they don’t need to be worried about that.

“We will try to bring the best players possible and have a strong squad.”

One of Benitez’s first priorities is to bring in a proven striker but the Spaniard has also spoken about plans to hold on to the “majority” of his squad and that no player will be sold if the deal isn’t the right one for the club.

Newcastle fans will be hoping they see a refreshed and competitive team on the pitch by the time they are ready to kick off the new Championship season on the first weekend of August.

By then the green shoots of recovery after relegation should be in sight.

That's one sentence.

That's the most significant sentence though.
