Rafa Benitez is increasingly close to staying on as Newcastle manager after two rounds of positive talks.

The Spaniard has been offered free reign to rebuild the club as he sees fit, and is discussing transfer targets.

Sources are confident he will stay after Benitez met MD Lee Charnley on Monday and was positive after meeting owner Mike Ashley 24 hours earlier.

He flew back to Merseyside last night but will return to Tyneside today to iron out more details.

It is possible that Benitez will revamp the Toon’s scouting system and that board member and chief scout Graham Carr’s days might be numbered.

1. Getting Benitez as manager.

2. Keeping Benitez as manager while we play football in the Championship.

Literally cannot find a good enough GIF to give an explanation on how fucked up that actually is.

Very promising, although knowing us it will all go pear shaped at the last minute and he'll be off.

Pretty sure I saw him driving down Jesmond Road tonight in a black Audi with a personalised number plate R9AFFA or something to that effect. I assume it was him. Although doesn't strike me as a man who would have a personalised plate.

You're all fuckwits. Even if he does stay, there is no f***ing hope. This is just prolonging Ashley's miserable reign at "NUFC".

Your having a bad day aren't you! Argument with the missus!!

Relegation from the premier league and complete decimation of my football club mate. Seems no-one else even gives a fuck.

5-1!!!!! FTS

Yes the club has been decimated, so have many others for various reasons. At least we've now got the chance to re-invent it with someone we can trust in charge. Ashley's a a clueless cunt as far as football is concerned, we get it. But if he has finally recognised that and is prepared to hand over the reins to one of the world's most respected managers then I'll take it.

Thought this was likely after players started coming out and saying they'd stay.

Still though, huge news. Probably more of a coup than getting him in the first place. Huge.
