The Spaniard has been offered free reign to rebuild the club as he sees fit, and is discussing transfer targets. Sources are confident he will stay after Benitez met MD Lee Charnley on Monday and was positive after meeting owner Mike Ashley 24 hours earlier. He flew back to Merseyside last night but will return to Tyneside today to iron out more details. It is possible that Benitez will revamp the Toon’s scouting system and that board member and chief scout Graham Carr’s days might be numbered. Pretty sure I saw him driving down Jesmond Road tonight in a black Audi with a personalised number plate R9AFFA or something to that effect. I assume it was him.
