Been told Utd will refund all ticket holders and then offer free entry to them. Applies to both sides. Will cost around Hundreds of Billions.

You would think that the security company would count it's fake bombs before and after the training exercise.

Exactly

TV: "Breaking news! Rubber-looking bomb found at Old Trafford!"

"Oi Bob, how many fake bombs did we bring back from Old Trafford?"

"4"

"Didn't we take 5?"

"Yup"

"Hm. Odd, wonder where the last fake bomb went. Oh well"

Update on suspicious device found at Old Trafford

Published on 15/5/2016 22:22:10

A suspicious item found at Old Trafford football stadium, which required a controlled explosion to be carried out, has now been identified as a training device.

Shortly before today’s planned football fixture (Sunday 15 May), which was due to kick off at 3pm, staff from the Manchester United ground alerted police to a suspicious item that had been found in the toilets within the North West Quadrant, between the Sir Alex Ferguson stand and the Stretford End.

Police quickly attended and explosive experts were called in to assess the item, which has been described as an incredibly realistic-looking explosive device.

Initially, a partial evacuation of the stadium was put in place but a decision was made between police and Manchester United club officials to abandon the game and a full controlled evacuation of the stadium was carried out.

Assistant Chief Constable John O’Hare from Greater Manchester Police said: “I am grateful to the Manchester United and Bournemouth supporters for their support and assistance today.

“Following today’s controlled explosion, we have since found out that the item was a training device which had accidentally been left by a private company following a training exercise involving explosive search dogs.

It was the dogs fault for not finding it.

So not only did the security firm leave a fake bomb in the stadium, they didn't have one member of staff listening to the news and available to react when a full bomb alert is announced for exactly the same place as their training exercise four days earlier.  Whatever training exercise was conducted, it either didn't involve or slipped the mind of the match day staff at Old Trafford. What a shambles.

As this incident has proved, any real life terrorist threat will involve the police and security forces, which raises the question of how valuable any training exercise conducted without them is going to be. After the shambles with 4GS during the Olympics and firms like Halliburton and KBR in the US, security should not be farmed out to (invariably politically connected) for-profit firms in the private sector.

It comes across to me like trying brush a situation under the carpet so that there isn't any alarm in the country. The press coverage was so limited as well when you bear in mind the gravity of it all.  It concerns me equally if it was in fact a training device as I fail to see how such a lengthy operation would take place without checking.
