Newcastle United transfer rumours in the press

Recommended Posts

We are very unlikely to sign a 20 plus goal a season striker, Rafa may well be trying to get a squad together to share the goals round evenly.

There is nigh on zero chance that we will get a recognised striker with such a reputation, but we can hope that Rafa has his eye on somebody who will quickly develop into such.

TBH though, if Rafa can get the rest of the team right, I can see Gayle being quite prolific, even in the Prem. His best season (in the prem) so far, is approaching.

Looks like a 70s porn star:

Hopefully turns out to be a gem found by Rafa in Spain like he the few he found when at Liverpool. Obviously not as good, but still.

Looking at the prices being asked for British footballers like Deeney and Gibson, I would guess Rafa would fancy he could find some far better quality players abroad for that sort of money.

I hope we can sign a couple of really big statement players as well as these standard buys. Anyone would want to play for Newcastle under Rafa. Not a return to the signings for the sake of it days, but a clear level above what we have now.

Think Rafa is going to buy a lot of players that are not quite established yet, but have really good potential, who can all make a contribution. Similar to his early Liverpool days.

Ashley will be swimming happily in his rice pudding swimming pool tonight if that's true

Nod, but they really do have to want to play for us. I know they're not the type of player you're talking about here, but I'd much rather avoid the likes of Clichy and others I've seen mentioned. It'd be good to see us filling the squad with talented players who see us as a step up and still have some/a lot to prove.

But yeah. One 'statement' signing seems very doable this summer.

I'm not expecting it all, at the end of the day we are a promoted team. Rafa isn't a magician, it will take at least one season before those types of signings are taking place.

Gayle'a very good at that, to be fair.

Holding the ball up?

Yes. I realise because he's shorter than 6' I must be wrong, like.

At leading the line he's quality. That side of his game doesn't get enough credit, probably due to the fact he scores every 93 minutes or whatever.

I think what Ron's trying to get at is that he's good at leading the line in a way that when the ball goes up top, it sticks, because he can take it down and move with it. His movement is what makes him ideal to lead the line in the modern game. Is he good at holding the ball up in a way that he's taking down a header against a defender and laying it off for a #10 running in to the box? Absolutely not. But if you get the ball up that way - over the top or through the channel - it'll stick and he can do something with it. He brings people in to play in other ways rather than just winning headers.

For a statement sigi¡ning I would go for Nonzi who is now at Seville, he has matured into a very fine holding midfielder who rarely misspasses and cleans and blocks everything. He gives the impression of a mix of yaya Toure and Patrick viera...

Would cost a fair bit tho...

Watch a fair bit of Spanish football as I live there 6 months of the year. Pires. Yeah. Not really what we should be looking for. Frustrating as hell to watch. Clearly has a bit of talent but I see huge parallels with him and Wijnaldum in that they tend to go on the missing list.

Is he similar to Wijnaldum in style of play as well? What position does he usually play?

Possibly Wijnaldum would've been really useful under the current regime. Still not blown away by the Pires link but guess we just trust Rafael.

The best comparison to a recent player would be Cabaye. Can pick a pass and dictate play, it doesn't help that he's been surrounded by absolute dross all year but he definitely has a tendency to go missing. Not a bad player but I can't see him doing any more than make up the numbers - hopefully I'm wrong.

What's really telling when you listen to people he's signed in the past (Bellamy etc) is that he's already completely aware of their abilities (and weaknesses) and he knows exactly where he wants them to play.

I can only imagine he's got a plan for Pires and I'm more than happy with that. Very comfortable with whoever he signs tbh.

Early indications he's going to repeat what he did for the championship season with players of a slightly or much better quality than we have now, i.e. big squad with plenty of cover to get through the demands of a full season.
