He hit 2 crosses in the second half that were at least 6 feet too high and hit far too hard, he hit another across the face of goal which Inspector Gadget would've got nowhere near. He's there to provide ammunition and he didn't provide it today. We were collectively awful for large parts today.

Some were too high and over-hit, but some were perfect for a striker who's interested in scoring. He provided a constant threat and always wanted the ball, unlike 3 or 4 others who were trying to pass the buck for 90 mins.

Christian Atsu steps up when United need him most

The Ghana international is, in many ways, a stereotypical winger in that he can frustrate the life out of supporters.

But the 25-year-old can also excite - and he most certainly has talent.

That’s why he was named Africa Cup of Nations player of the tournament in 2015, and then in the best team in the 2017 edition of the same competition.

Given this was his first start since the victory over Nottingham Forest win on December 30, it was an interesting decision from Benitez to field Atsu.

But seemingly the Magpies boss is rotating his squad ahead of three hugely-important games inside a week.

nd Atsu rewarded Benitez for the Spaniard’s faith, by dragging Newcastle back into the game.

Not only did he create the first goal with a lovely low cross into the box which created havoc, he regularly got past Zak Vyner and to the byline.

Atsu’s crosses were hit and miss - but they drove Newcastle forward and helped them rescue a point from this tie, and very nearly all three.

Surely we will see more of the winger over the next week-and-a-half.

He was pua lethal today I thought.

Apart from missing a good chance.

How do you expect him to be sharp  when  he hardly plays?

Mitrovic was awful again today but when you have a yard of space you should be able to put in a half decent cross, Atsu was hitting them like a goal line clearance. He played better than most but his crossing was disappointing. If Dummett had hit some of those crosses he'd be slated on here.

He's going to over-hit a cross or run the ball out of play occasionally, because that's the sort of player that he is - an attacking wide man who tries to make things happen. Not everything is going to come off, but there is genuine fear amongst opposition defenders when he gets the ball and he creates chances time and time again.

He's about one million times more effective than Gouffran and should be starting every week.

I can't even remember the last cross Gouffran delivered. If Atsu overhits 3 crosses but deliver 2 decent ones, that's still 2 more chances that he's created than Gouffran will. The only argument for Gouffran is that he'll defend better, I don't even know why there's any moaning about Atsu's delivery in comparison.

Creates a lot of big chances for us every game. So much more of a winger than gouffran. If Gayle had been playing the last games he'd probably have 2-3 more assists

Yup - and the more he plays the better he'll get.
