Just a reminder to all of you who are in the process of becoming Done With Football: your local non league club is probably worth a look and could probably do with your support. At first it'll just about scratch the itch, but in a year or two you might be going there on a Saturday and just checking Newcastle and Sunderland scores with everyone else. Give it a go  worked for me

4-3 Jarrow in the end, Alnwick with about seven starters missing due to the early start to the season had a pretty honking first half but gave it a good go second half. A saved penalty could have made it a different story, and a frankly hopeless display of officiating from a ref and linesmen who largely bought all of the home side's unwarranted twisting was aggravating (he played less stoppage time than the time it took a red carded Jarrow player to slowly wander away from the penalty area).

Nice to have it back though, and a spirited effort from a cobbled together team.

I was at Durham United (uni team) for their first game in the Northern League against Boldon.

Boldon won 4-3 in a very entertaining and feisty game.

On site Cafe Nero a bonus.

Christ

Do they want Isak you reckon?  I could live with him going there

It's great news and good to see investment but honestly feels a bit crappy that one club is benefitting to that extent while most others are getting fuck all and plenty of it

I was debating going to either Prudhoe on Friday or Newcastle Blue Star on Saturday, but didn't end up going to either. The first was 0-0 and the second 3-3.

There's a vlog on the Prudhoe match.

An eventful start to the season at Blue Star. 2-0 Whitley at HT, Blue Star took off Michael Ndwini who it looked like they'd tried to accommodate in a front 3, then they improved to level at 2-2. Looked like Whitley snatched it about 10 mins from the end with a 3rd and then Star squandered a very late penalty. There was still time for a Whitley Bay own goal and a Blue Star equaliser.  So 3-3 in front of a good crowd of 548.

Blyth lose 5-1 at Whitby. tonight, ???

Doesn't seem to be much confidence going into the new season. Had been contemplating getting myself and nephew season tickets - but getting a young squad primarily from the Northern Alliance and NL2, seems to be asking for real trouble. :(  i want there to be a bit of hope, not merely delaying the inevitable 3rd relegation in a row.

Went to Benfield 1 - 2 West Auckland last night.

Pretty poor game, mostly all the visitors who had more physicality, 2 or 3 units who dominated most of the game and Benfield largely kept trying to go direct which played into their hands. Decent bit of football from Benfield for the opener to be fair, very scrappy and avoidable OG for West to equalise, then the winner from a botched clearance and the ball ultimately being played back across the box and some poor defending.

As an aside West Auckland were the chippiest team and bench I've heard for getting at the ref for a long time, all part of the game but some of their patter was embarrassing at times.

Alnwick comfortably turned over Durham United 4-0 last night, hat trick for Potts who's getting starts since Usman Ogidan went to Northallerton and will hopefully kick on.  A professional job against a team who look out of their depth in NL - quiet, and slow to every ball.  Somebody said up the page that they're a university team and teams like that often struggle for players early season, which might explain it.

Teams and crowds getting at the ref and linesmen is the thing I hate most about football at this level @Kilcline, it's painful to listen to the endless completely false offside / handbaaalll / wor baaaal shouts from Northern League teams and more painful to see how often the officials go with a home bench/crowd (which is why they do it obviously).  Happens at all levels obviously, it's just you can hear every word at this level

Couldn't pay me enough to ref/ be a linesmen in non league

People far closer to you abusing you and its proper unfiltered. Most of it gets lost in a prem ground but they will hear every word at them levels

Worst I ever heard was at Berwick, absolutely hideous abuse.  Most of what I hear round here is just questioning or trying to influence decisions but at Berwick they were solid, comprehensive curses on the officials and their families going back and forward several generations.

Yeah Durham were OK when I saw them against Boldon on Saturday but they tired massively as the game went on and had no subs. I think when they were in the Wearside they were actually allowed to start their season a bit later to allow for their players to return but don't have that luxury in the NL.

Was at Berwick on Saturday and it's still the same. The language/abuse they dish out is simply unrivalled

Took 2 other lads with me who've never been before and they were shocked by it but also loved it at the same time and will be coming back. Preferred it to the sanitised shite at SJP nowadays.

They beat Cowdenbeath 2-0. Great banter between the 2 sets of fans mind, especially when Cowdenbeath scored 1st, and one of their lot threw a blue flare onto the pitch during the celebrations, only for the linesman to very belatedly flag him offside. They took some shit for that like [emoji38]

Yeah it's definitely a more visceral experience at non and lower leagues, I prefer it as well now. Don't agree with the shit the officials get but the fan Vs fan stuff can be absolutely spectacular
