The Prophet
Henry Winter: "Sad to see such a talent as Jhon Duran giving up the Champions League for the Saudi Pro League. He’s a good finisher – fine goals against Bayern Munich, Palace, Liverpool, Manchester City, West Ham, Everton, amongst others. It’s his career, his choice so good luck to Duran at Al-Nassr. The money will be fabulous. The football less so. And now’s the wrong time to leave Aston Villa. Villa Park is buzzing, the team going places under Unai Emery, progressing in Europe, good squad and camaraderie. He does get games (29 games and 12 goals this season) even if Ollie Watkins is first choice. He’s 21, Watkins 30 later this year. Inevitably a PSR element and Villa received an offer - £65m+ - they couldn’t refuse. Good business by Villa plus it ends the drama occasionally attached to Duran. But it’s still a shame. He gets to play with Ronaldo at Al Nassr, average gate 16,453 (the Holte End alone is 13,000+). A coup for the Saudi Pro League and Duran’s bank manager. A sad moment for his career development. He will have some big games – with Colombia."

joeyt
Saudi clubs must be so attractive for players who play for middling clubs, peaked later in their career than most and aren't from Western Europe

Said before, it makes no sense that the transfer fee has to be way over inflated aswell. Sure wages to entice players to a shot league, but why is every transfer fee atleast £20m probably over people's true value.
Wolfcastle
Its probably what they'd have transfered to clubs domestically for pre PSR. Only way clubs can get that money is now is to sell to Saudi. Edited January 30 by Wolfcastle
The Prophet
Don't think it's particularly fishy. PIF want the domestic league to be a serious player. Providing its clubs with the cash to buy players who legitimise it is the game here.
Ben
Saudi window closes tomorrow so they are cutting it fine if they want any of our players
alexf
But why the inflated fee's? I get the need to pay the players higher wages. But why should it make a difference to a club where the player is going. If anything it's better for them when players go to Saudi as they won't face them in the same league or Europe. Sure in January teams will ask for larger fees to let players go. But we have seen these high transfer fees in the summers aswell.

NE27
Saudis are just building a strong case to allow us to flog players left right and centre for stonking fee's like everyone else in the league. Not really, they're just pushing their league interests. Probably not much deeper than that.
Elric
Any hint of an inflated fee where we're concerned = immediate investigation over fair market value Other clubs = partridgeshrug.gif ... is basically what it is.

mighty__mag
I'd be ripping their hand off for Mitoma, he literally had a Miggy season, then just been average ever since.
JUICE690
Mitoma for north of 50 mil is nuts. Hardly a stand out player in the league and he'll be 28 in a few months so it's not like he's going to improve. Weird (and equally frustrating) one this.
Menace
Pretty obvious they value their league ahead of us like, just shit they are strengthening direct rivals.
