mouldy_uk
I’ve slated him enough times on here in the past, so feel like a hypocrite, but I definitely feel we missed him today.
ohmelads
Probably wouldn't have have changed the result, because we were shit everywhere, but he was blatantly missed. We lost the midfield battle and the midfield three were all to a man terrible. Longstaff covers a massive amount of turf and does the less glamorous work. I sometimes wonder if he's underrated because of his local roots. He has been missing sitters, which is frustrating, but if he was Brazilian, I think fans would love him for what he does do. I don't think it's to do with him being local, but 100% effort and tactical discipline do get overlooked as qualities. People assume that they're achievable by everyone, but they're not, and it means his specialisms get treated as standard fare. AyeDubbleYoo
I think I need to watch a few games back just focusing on Longstaff, because I really don’t see all of this unsung hero work he does. Happy to admit I’m a little biased against him though, so I’m probably wrong. I definitely notice all his mistakes Edited April 16, 2023 by AyeDubbleYoo
Holloway
The appreciation of his workrate and getting into great threatening positions is on a par with the frustration of his often wayward distribution and erratic finishing for me. Which probably falls into the 'quite' category

I definitely notice all his mistakes I don't know what the stats are now, but earlier in the season he had covered more ground than anyone else in the league. He might not be the best on the ball, but he is always available for it whether it's in deeper areas or further up the field. His understanding of the press is probably the best in the side. He is much, much better at running back than Willock is. Maybe these aren't overtly obvious things, but they were all missing yesterday.

They were missing when he was on the pitch in the first half against Brentford as well, then we improved dramatically once he was taken off. We've struggled in the last couple of games in midfield, just might be a case of hitting a block after an intense couple of weeks, not necessarily one individual out of the midfield options. There might even be a case for taking Bruno out of the midfield if his ankle is affecting him. Very difficult to press as a team if one player is at 80%. Miercoles
See, you put him in and you score six goals, simple. For real though, how about that little backheel for the fifth goal, delightful.
TRon
Maybe we were looking at signing McTominay as his understudy.

alexf
Yeah I think it's clear from the villa game that Sean is an important cog in that midfield 3 and we miss him when he's not playing. Never thought I'd say that until this season. Well done lad.
gbandit
The biggest difference in this lad’s game since the start of the season is his awareness and ability to release the ball much quicker when under pressure. He’s learning from Howe and I’m sure from Bruno about how to use his body better to both shield but also not stay too static when he receives the ball. It’s a massive improvement

It’s a massive improvement Yeah, he rarely seems to get caught now and it was a glaring flaw in his game early season. Love his runs into the half space like the one for his assist on the 5th goal. He did it for the 6th as well which took Hojberg with him and opened up the space for Trips' pass to Willock. Won the ball back for the first an' all. Big player for us. gbandit
Yeah, he’s massive for us now. His work rate defensively in the middle is second only to Joelinton really but his movement in the final third is outstanding. He’s the perfect example of someone making the absolute most of their sporting talent and should be an inspiration to any footballer wanting to be the best they can be
Kanj
Always funny to me that when he misplaces a pass or loses the ball in he exact details are remembered yet footballers all over, our team and others do all of that every single game. Listening to a podcast this morning and it was really insane to me how he gets measured so differently. He has to be Perfect in some peoples mind to be worthy of any praise. toon25
This guy has to be up there with Murphy as the most transformed player this season. Big Jo had his butterfly moment at the tail end of the last.

I do wonder if that’s confirmation bias for those who scoffed at the Man Utd links. For me, he’s the midfield glue. When we’re deeper he’ll burst forward to get into the box. When others venture forward he’ll drop in to be a presence. I think he is another one that has benefitted from Eddie Howe’s fitness work. He’s relentless, and that makes him a huge asset. Joseph
I had completely forgotten how often he was getting caught dawdling in the ball earlier in the season. Was absolutely infuriating. Just doesn’t happen at all now though.
