Coffee_Johnny
Right back in my good books today. Not least for ‘that’ tackle and rushing to the skirmish in the tunnel. Warrior.
McCormick
It was the perfect game to showcase what Longstaff brings to the team; industry off the ball and lots of covering. In games where we’ve got more than 25% possession is when he looks like the weaker link in the middle. Must admit, I was seething when I saw Sean being all buddy-buddy with that diving melt at the end of the match though. Sounds shan, but he needs more bite in him. I don’t want my midfielders to be sweetie-pies on the pitch. Edited August 18, 2024 by McCormick
Rich
Burn and others were the same, to be fair, seems harsh to single Longstaff out for that especially after he made a point of putting him on his arse during the game.

Our midfield didn't really click when we had 11 men out there though so we really need players who can do good work on it. For this game once we went down to 10 men we needed grafters who would close the spaces down and for that situation Longstaff was perfect.
Smal
he looked back to his best physically which I think is the most important thing for him. Was quicker across the pitch and faster into his tackles.
gbandit
Indeed, no hesitating and dilly dallying off the ball, which is key to him playing well in a defensive sense

Fair. Must have missed the others doing it. Edited August 18, 2024 by McCormick
GeordieDazzler
He was reportedly playing through injury a lot of last season - do we know if he’s back fully fit? People forget how good he was points in 22/
ExiledGeordie
I really like him, I know he’s limited to a point but as others have said he was injured for much of last season. Ultimately Willock and Tonali offer more each with different attributes but Longstaff absolutely has a role to play here.

Shak
Barring significant injury issues, there's no good reason for us to see him start many games again. Tonali back. Also, we looked massively better with Joelinton at RCM and Willock LCM after the changes. And that was an off-form Joelinton. He's an absolute albatross around the neck of our attempts to play decent football. It's not just his inability to pick a pass, he has no ability to do anything progressive with the ball when under pressure in possession. It's either play a ball back which puts the defender or keeper under pressure or else attempt to get his body between the opponent and the ball and then fall down. He's not the only problem but man I'm sick of watching him.
Scoot
With Willock and Tonali coming back now, don't want to see Longstaff start anymore games. There's no excuses now.
Skeletor
One to replace next season (or not if Miley becomes good enough). Still appreciate his service to the club though.

Menace
Turns out it wasn't injuries as to why he was shite last season. He's just shite.
gbandit
Our biggest weakness and has been since all of last season. Yes, our right wing is a massive weakness too but its nowhere near as pivotal in affecting us game after game in lots of different ways (attacks breaking down from slow play, getting the ball taken off him with ease, going down when he hasn’t actually been fouled)

At least with Longstaff we have Tonali and Willock (maybe even Miley).
Theregulars
Too often powderpuff and a blockage in flowing play.

midds
At one point in the first half he carried the ball about 50 yards and Isak is screaming to be played in. Not once did I have any faith in him being able to slot a fairly simple ball into his path, just sat back and waited for him to eventually lose possession. Which he promptly did. Sick of watching him and sick of the excuses people make for him. We know he's a lovely lad and he's a grafter and he's had injuries and he's low on confidence and he's tired and he gives his all... Ultimately he's just not very good and is still starting. To be honest it's Howe that I've got the main issue with as he's the one who picks him regardless every fucking week
Guest
Simply not good enough to be starting games, offers very little, got to be ruthless if we’re to progress.

Eddie's loyalty to players who are not up to scratch is quite annoying. Murphy being another. Think he needs to be more ruthless. Although what's going on transfer wise is anyone's guess at this point, but ruthless it definitely isn't. Edited August 25, 2024 by Skeletor

Holloway
This has to be his last season with significant involvement man, it will be interesting to see what they do with Tonali back, favored starting 3 with the obvious or a more rotation approach. Willock's emergence with further weaken his shout, you'd imagine
Newcastle Fan
Good thing is we have a 70m midfielder in his positon back on wednsday. Although last year he looked like an upgrade on that same midfielder.
