I really doubt Longstaff would have made a difference to outcome of the game, we were off it all over the pitch.

I think we would have lost as we were shit all over but we looked so unbalanced. Longstaff knows his job and does it and that alone would have made us better today IMO

I think it was worth trying this midfield, but now with hindsight he would've made quite a significant difference imo. Trippier was badly exposed, didn't have the same passes available and Bruno needs someone to drop in for him when he goes wandering, which just didn't happen today.

I am not saying we must start him every game, but then seems someone need to do his job when we are not playing him. Something was obviously broken today

He's crucial, it seems. We do need to go out and buy the best DMC we can get our hands on though.

Ugarte. Make it happen, Amanda.

Longstaff is the sort of player you don't really notice when he's playing, but he cuts so much out and covers a lot of ground. We missed him massively today.

Was just about to post this same thing. He never seems to stand out or get much praise, but we clearly missed something in the middle today.

Probably wouldn't have have changed the result, because we were shit everywhere, but he was blatantly missed. We lost the midfield battle and the midfield three were all to a man terrible. Longstaff covers a massive amount of turf and does the less glamorous work. I sometimes wonder if he's underrated because of his local roots. He has been missing sitters, which is frustrating, but if he was Brazilian, I think fans would love him for what he does do.

I don't think it's to do with him being local, but 100% effort and tactical discipline do get overlooked as qualities. People assume that they're achievable by everyone, but they're not, and it means his specialisms get treated as standard fare.

I think I need to watch a few games back just focusing on Longstaff, because I really don’t see all of this unsung hero work he does.

Happy to admit I’m a little biased against him though, so I’m probably wrong. I definitely notice all his mistakes

The appreciation of his workrate and getting into great threatening positions is on a par with the frustration of his often wayward distribution and erratic finishing for me. Which probably falls into the 'quite' category

I don't know what the stats are now, but earlier in the season he had covered more ground than anyone else in the league.

He might not be the best on the ball, but he is always available for it whether it's in deeper areas or further up the field. His understanding of the press is probably the best in the side. He is much, much better at running back than Willock is. Maybe these aren't overtly obvious things, but they were all missing yesterday.

They were missing when he was on the pitch in the first half against Brentford as well, then we improved dramatically once he was taken off. We've struggled in the last couple of games in midfield, just might be a case of hitting a block after an intense couple of weeks, not necessarily one individual out of the midfield options. There might even be a case for taking Bruno out of the midfield if his ankle is affecting him. Very difficult to press as a team if one player is at 80%.
