What did you make of John Barnes' contribution for us?

EDIT: And Stuart Pearce's?

Barnes showed glimpses of his talent, but at about 16 clem he was up against it

Liked Pearce, on the decline but his leadership qualities were evident, good for the young uns I felt at the time

Barnes was great for us and that's speaking as someone that often thought he was overrated for Liverpool and England. Owed us nothing when he left.

This

He was about two stone overweight if memory serves correct. And Ian Rush basically on his zimmer up top.

What a strange time in the clubs history that was😂

On a free with Shearer and Asprilla out, played wide and as a CF. Didn't have the legs of when he was younger but adapted his game for it and was as much a leader as Pearce.

I can’t even remember a single goal he scored for us

Pearce wasn't what he had been two or three years before either. They both came in and done decent jobs for us. Not like Rush or John Bailey, Kenny Sansom, others we-ve had at the end of their careers.

Barnes' talent nicked those few moments, very much like Kluivert as a comparison. As a pro, he was a bloated stroller, with a little bullet heed

First time ive heard anyone using Great about Newcastle J. Barnes 🤣

From wiki: "Pearce has since stated in his autobiography, Psycho, that he felt Barnes was overweight by the time he joined Newcastle and that both Barnes and Rush had less desire than himself to win at that stage in their careers as they had already won everything, and that they could have had more of an edge to them"

He also sound like someone leading by example.. 🤣

When I remember John Barnes playing for us, the overriding memory for me is that if it wasn't for him, we would have been relegated that season.

I can't say that I can remember an individual moment of his but just that his overall contribution was invaluable.

Barnes dragged us through some games when without him we would have lost. We didn’t have loads of points to play with so if we hadn’t won those games especially when Shearer was injured who knows where we would have been.

Class goal away at West Ham and a great performance in a target man type role at home to Southampton spring to mind. It might be in Shay’s book where he says he wouldn’t do the warm up he’d just be in the ice bath

With 6. And I can’t remember any of them

Barnes scored a corker away to West Ham - I think opening day of the season; I was there (and can be see in The Mag match report photo should anyone have an old copy!).  He wasn’t terrible from memory.  Pearce was an excellent signing - he got another England cap after he left.

We signed Gary Speed to replace Barnes on the LW, and an over-the-hill Barnes was still better than Speed on the left.

He was our top scorer one season. Criminal what Daglish did.

Dalglish had to polish a turd that season. Shame he chose to use a chainsaw to do it. He did gave us Solano though, and Speed...pity Speed didnt really come good till 2 seasons later

Outside of the box with the outside of his left peg - majestic goal!
