His pace is weird. He looks so lethargic in everything he does. But then he's out-sprinting Hakimi.

Barnes burst of acceleration isn't quite as extreme but they're both deceivingly quick after a good touch.

What he’s always been really good at is using his pace in little bursts. He never seems to bomb down the length of the pitch, but will slow and look lethargic then just drag the ball with him and burst into a sprint.

He’s always seemed to be difficult to read for opposition defenders.

He’s a much better wide player than central, for me.

He is rapid. Thought he got in the way a bit early on and wanted too many touches, like so many of our players. But he caused them no end of bother with his movement and direct running.

He did well in a similar role against Marseille (glad those wankers are out). But this was up another level.

Think that’s his best position, though I’ve said it before. He’s basically a hybrid 10/winger, not a CM.

Easy to say after that performance but he’s much more effective further forward, always has been, played number 10 for Bruce then did really well wide left at the start of Howe’s tenure. Hope he gets more opportunities.

I know his contract length might affect it, but we really should ask for a decent fee for him. Just look at what we have had to spend to get players at his level.

Best knee slides I’ve seen

Good call. In a season where knee sllides have become ten a penny, his are on another level.

Welcome back Joe, we haven't seen you for awhile.

Was excellent on the night even before his goal.

Really hope he can use this as a springboard to a comeback of form as the old wIllock is really useful and we need that depth in the squad.

He’s just a weird player, he will look like he doesn’t know what’s going on but then also come up with moments of utter quality.

My MOM. So good. This is the Willock we love and want to see, just a shame he’s been near enough done as a player for past 3 seasons :(

Put this in Wolte thread in relation to a 4-4-1-1 approach.

Quote

Think the way Willock played in particular (Ramsey to less extent as he was deeper at times), it hopefully showed to Howe it can be done. Do think a run of Willock as the 10 off Wolte could be weirdly the secret formula. Perfectplayer for runs beyond someone centrally.

So starting XI of:

Pope: Miley/Tino, Thaiw, Botman/Burn, Hall: Elanga/Murphy, Tonali/Joe, Bruno G, Gordon/Barnes: Willock/Ramsey: Wolte / Wissa

Option is there to drop into a 4-5-1 to soak up pressure, but fundamentally that CM is pushed right up in possession.

Does mean a different approach to summer targets needed to shape that midfield. Unsure if Ramsey can be moulded to play the 10 or Bruno position.

It's sad that we've been robbed of more matches like that like, amongst a crowd of incredible performers in 22/23 he was my personal favourite.

When he's on it and playing with that grimace on his face he's an absolute pleasure to watch. Smart, determined, and always driving forward.

Think if last night is the start of a run of performances up to summer, he’ll get a new deal IMO. Age is on his side and we’ll see it as a reasonable contract without having to spend on a replacement that is no guarantee in short term.

We can then roll the dice on signing a raw £10m-£15m CM that will be on fringes with Miley able to get solid minutes at right back.

Essentially helps us more to get this Willock back then sell and buy someone of value of £35m+.

Could see the confidence rush back through his veins. Great to see on a human level someone just grow 3-4 inches in real time. First time in a long time it looked like he was having fun out there. Was gutted to be subbed. Must be like Cinderella at midnight - having the time of your life and having to leave early. He was knackered.
