Dr Jinx
He’s got to work with what he has for a few months, makes sense to build their confidence to try and get as much from them as possible between now and January.

Dokko
Most likely just spiel to get the best out of what he's got right now. He's got a rep of getting players performing above their ceiling. If we could get Shelvey performing at 80% we would see a totally different player and someone worth Fielding. Right now he's a mess physically & mentally but it's a fresh start for all, including him so let's see if he takes it. Even if it's for 2 months till he burns out or gets sick of the effort, really that's all we need him for until we can replace him.
steve_69
There's a lot of negativity around Shelvey from the forum and the fanbase but one thing that has never been in question IMO is his ability. If Howe can motivate him and fit him into the team in a way that maximises his strengths and mitigates his lack of workrate, he can still be a huge asset. I'm guessing he's seeing a response in training otherwise Joe and JJS wouldn't be getting praised unless the questions were direct about them. Just need a Longstaff quote and we're fully on board the underpeformers train.

Gaztoon
Everyone for me as a clean slate.. if howe thinks anyone as shown enough to play then I'm 100% behind it.... for now ?

Until the 3rd minute anyway, when Brentford midfielder strolls past Shelvey and he doesn't track back. Then he will get both barrels!

hakka
He can't ship these lads out until January, so he has to motivate them and get them performing right now. He will be trying to unlock their potential or get them back to their best and that's fine - it's what should be happening. I'm certain they will be targeted for replacement when the time comes still for the ones that deserve it most.
NUFC_Chris
Every player deserves a clean slate under the new manager, in my opinion. If he can get something out of Joelinton, (which he may well do, as I think there is a player in there), all the better. I dearly hope we're in a position to move on from him in the very near future but in the mean-time we need performances from our current players. So I've no issue with comments like that. Beats wittering on about how class the opposition are. Totally agree, if he’s on song he gets us forward , he will binned ASAP though . In the meantime we need him on song . madras
Re Shelvey, didn't someone get a stat thing which showed he ran as much as everyone else and had decent pace as well but when you watch the game he's always chasing and behind the player who has broke on him, seemingly like he's slow to read the game defensively rather than being slow and lazy. Might have dreamt it mind.
Mikky
In fairness to Joelinton he’s had to endure shoddy coaching for the last 2 years - it’s no surprise he is totally shot - will park my judgement on him until we see him under Howe
54
Based on his pre-match conference, think we'll probably see Dubs and Schar starting, but the rest being players that have been there for the last 10 days.
Armchair Pundit
Had to laugh at alchy Alan Brazil on Talkshite, saying how he wasn't having it that the players were unfit and didn't train to the same level under the previous manager. Howe is clearly a million times better from what we've seen so far, I can't imagine the players calling him Mike Bassett in a Whatsapp group.

I remember reading an article maybe 10-ish years ago by a secret footballer(?) saying that it was quite common for players to maximize the distance covered with minimal effort during matches as a lot of managers, at the time at least, used it as a big metric for whom to play. Wouldn't be surprised if the Steves sports scientific approach would fall under that category and being fooled by a number instead of recognizing what is happening on the pitch, thus continuing to play Shelvey at every given opportunity. It's easy to cover distance at a constant speed for a long time...downside is that football requires short distances at high speed regularly with plenty of walking pace. Shelvey could easily cover as much ground as St Maximin without breaking a sweat just by moving around generally as he simply doesn't have the same energy to make it effective. It's pretty well documented that football is the most exhausting sport if done properly

Not sure if I'm misinterpreting you, or you me, but the point I think you're trying to make is the same I was trying to; that Shelvey is most likely moving without any real purpose often to make it look like he puts in more effort than he does, and when the Steves have looked at the stats they think he puts enough effort in without much scrutiny on how effective his movement is. wormy
Let's not forget that Rafa got enough out of him to become a fringe contender for England's World Cup squad. Whatever Howe needs to do to see us through this season, I'm on board with.
