I'm sure someone has done this already in the thread but having been linked to defenders in January I went to see what our last few non-loan defender signings were, it's not a particular surprise that we concede loads of goals when you look at the recruitment:

19/20

  • Emil Krafth - doesn't start

18/19

  • Federico Fernández
  • Fabian Schär

17/18

  • Florian Lejeune
  • Javier Manquillo - doesn't start

16/17

  • Ciaran Clark
  • DeAndre Yedlin
  • Grant Hanley
  • Achraf Lazaar

15/16

  • Mbemba
  • Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa
  • Daryl Janmaat
  • Jamaal Lascelles

Bentaleb. He was absolutely shocking.

Trying to think which was the most exciting summer, transfers-wise. Probably 05/06 for me, when we got Parker, Emre, Luque and Owen. Then a really nice surprise right at the end when they brought Nobby back. The Allardyce one was pretty exciting too, lol.

16/17 was good, when it seemed like we were signing a really high calibre player (by Championship standards) every other day.

I thought the 15/16 one was cracking. Wijnaldum, Mitrovic, Mbemba & Thauvin. 4 relatively biggish money signings on 4 highly rated young players…

12/13 was a really good January on paper and it still stopped us being Pardewed into the Championship. There were such high hopes for Yanga-Mbiwa as well. Sissoko's debut against Ashley Cole was probably the highlight of that miserable season.

Siem de Jong that summer too?

Thought that was a real coup at the time

Just flicking through 'contracts expiring 2022' on transfermarkt. Not really much to choose from when it comes to PL-based attackers who wouldn't be taking quite a big step down (and therefore you wonder about their motivation). See Ben Brereton Diaz is on there, though. Wonder if he's worth a punt? Having a really good season at Blackburn, riding a wave on the Chile stuff, and it's an obvious step up.

Raiding Burnley for Tarkowski seems a bit of a no-brainer, like. Pity Wood's contract isn't nearly up, too. Always liked him and he's really consistent for them.

Is there a table showing what % of January signings get completed in each week of the transfer window.

I’ve seen a few people saying they expect players to be pre-agreed ahead of Jan 1st but this does not reflect a market where sellers and agents keep things hanging as late as possible to get the best deal

Stavely already said we will be spending in January despite it not being what they originally would have chosen to do.

Being linked to Jonathan David, that would be a cracking signing.

He's in form, too. Also linked with Inter and Liverpool, but we could offer him more playing time and money.

Would love him here with us and playing in the league would enhance his international play due to the higher level of competition.

Yeah, not saying it’s true but they’re running with the story that PIF have intervened and do not want to spend in the event we get relegated.

I know a few senior sources at PIF and they are genuinely very worried about relegation (as they should be) as it would be massively embarrassing for them. Especially after all the efforts they made to buy the club.

If we get relegated, then it’d be embarrassing for them sure…so why not spend money to try and not get relegated? Doesn’t make sense.

What was the point in buying the club then? Football clubs can get relegated, it comes with the territory.
