Going to be immense for us, just taking time to get his sharpness back i reckon.

Surely worthy of an updated thread title as well!

Happy with this, removes any doubt that he wanted out and hopefully he can now focus on just getting that sharpness back as he’s technically our best defender when he’s firing on all cylinders.

Okay, nerds. What does this mean for amortisation?

New players galore?

Could be wrong but it might be a reasonable help tbf. I think the main benefit is that if his original transfer fee was £35m, the remaining year and a half's amortisation (£10.5m-ish) now gets spread across the next 4 and a half years so brings it down to ~£2.3m, saving £8m or so p.a.?

Obviously there's still the wages on top so the ultimate outcome depends on how much his wages have increased by but I'd hazard a guess he's not wangled a huge jump given the circumstances.

---

Ignoring the finances though, I'm happy with this. I'm not writing him off until hes had a solid run without injuries to see if he's just a bit rusty or that's just him now. He's more than worth waiting to find out, though.

Crazy that he's already 26, mind. I think he's just been permanently 23 in my mind.

Answer: Sven’s annual amortisation goes from £6.9m a year to £2.56m. So frees up a £23m player amortised over 5 years-ish. Wages not included.

Good news…. To be competitive we need 4 quality centre backs…

Probably need to buy a top class one but I’d have Botman as one of the 4 without question…

Burn, Botman, Thiaw plus a younger RCB signing and that’s a good group for the 2026/2027 season.

I rate him as a player but this smells of a mistake. I don't think we've had 20 premier league appearances from him in any of the last three seasons.

I mean, he'd have needed to play in all but one of our games so far to be on 20 appearances in 25/26. Give him a chance, eh.

Odd, been riddled with injuries, and worse, he's gone from looking like an elite clubs lynchpin to looking like he's trying to show off the new flaws in his game. Hope and pray he gets back, that was the best Newcastle center back I've seen, granted it was a very short time period, but has looked a shell since. Where he was deceptively quick and agile (considering he's a fridge with legs) now the movement, positioning, composure, it all looks calamitous, and you get the sense he knows it and doesn't trust himself. Reminds me of the Fernando Torres situation, hopefully he rebounds. Hopefully its a contract that doesn't hang around our neck for the duration if he isn't good enough.
