LiquidAK
Just now, andycap said: Let's be honest it took a long time for him to finally drop the bugger. 😂 And look how it's turned out. He knows what he's doing. Easing Tonali into a role which requires huge tactical discipline is not the same as dropping one of our best performing players to accommodate a player that has done great at CB but has clear weaknesses at LB. Hall isn't getting dropped for Burn outside of the occasional resting. I think it's possible, even likely that Botman will have to fight for a starting spot with Burn given how well he's done at CB. Before long it'll be Sven's again but I wouldn't be at all shocked if even when fit he's not an immediate starter every game.

wormy
Lejeune was such a what if. Looked so good before Harry Kane did one of his characteristically 'uncharacteristic' Harry Kane things.

Since he left us just one injury, out for a month in September 2021 with an ankle injury. He's played 30+ league games in La Liga every year since he left us. Nice he's been able to play out his career. Edited January 1 by Checko

geordiesteve710
I think at most he will get 20 minutes at the end. Hopefully in preparation for a longer appearance at Arsenal.
STM
I don't think giving him 60 minutes is so much a risk of injury, because he's already had one U21 game and multiple behind closed doors games. The reason it's a risk is because if he's even 5% off full speed it could cost us in the game. The problem is, we still don't know whether Kelly is anywhere near a quality performance. The other option is to play Tino CB, but I really can't see that happening. Schar is only missing in two games, so if Botman was to come in, he could quickly be brought back out of the firing line when Schar returns. It won't say much about Howes confidence in Kelly if he plays Botman mind. Edited January 2 by STM
Hanshithispantz
In reality it will be Kelly RCB like, he'll look unreasonably good and ping a few worldies over the top.
Alberto2005
Tbf to Kelly, was anyone good in that West Ham game? And we were under performing in all the other games he played.

The game before that which he played at CB was Chelsea in the cup and everyone was raving about him and suggesting he replaced Burn. In reality he’s a bog standard PL CB who had one shitter for us. Some people are going on as if we’re chucking in Cacapa.
STM
I'm still hopefully that he will become the player we thought he would. We know how meticulous Eddie is with new signings. At least we know Eddie won't give up on him, in fact he will be determined more than ever to make him into a player for us.
54
Quote Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on Sven Botman returning after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in March: "He's worked incredibly hard to get himself in a good condition. He's had three games, a lot of internal training as well. He's certainly in and around my thoughts. I'll have to make a decision on who I think best fits that position. Great to have Sven in and around and available again. "We've taken longer than maybe we normally would have done through respect of the injury he had to try and make sure he has the best chance of staying fit and when he comes back, hitting the ground running, which is absolutely vital. "I've got a decision to make in terms of team selection, but if Sven is in the squad it's because he's fit and available."
Lush Vlad
I didn't realise he had played 3 games. I suppose they had some behind closed doors friendlies arranged for him, too. All sounding pretty positive. I still think it would be a bit mental to chuck him back in away at Spurs and/or Arsenal after so long out. More from a performance perspective and how much quicker and difficult the games will be to say, a more steady affair at home, where we might be rotating anyway. Like the 3rd round of the FA Cup. But Howe sees him in training every day and Bunce is supposed to be overseeing all the performance related stuff to stop us bringing players back too soon. So I'm sure it will be the right decision, either way.
Unbelievable
Can’t wait to see our terminator back in action. If deemed fit I wouldn’t be adverse to seeing how he works with BDB and have Schar compete to win his place back once he’s sat out his suspensions. BermyToon
As much as I'd take Botman over Kelly any day, I wouldn't have Botman play more than 10-15 minutes against Spurs, just to avoid any injury recurrence.

Tsunami
I’d be really surprised if he started. If Tripps is fit I’d start Tripps with Kelly RCB and tell Tripps to talk Kelly through the game. He’ll need the practice for the Arsenal game as surely Botman sits that one out and starts against Bromley or comes on at 60 mins.
Pilko
I think Kelly plays tomorrow and Botman gets a cameo (85th minute onwards). Agree with most who say Botman probably plays against Bromley.
Unbelievable
As has been said by others, if Botman is physically ready to go (signed off as such by Bunce), but the concern is match fitness then I don't see how that does not apply to Kelly, who has only played one full game six weeks ago (West Ham 2-0 loss) and other than that only had two extra time substitute appearances since September 21st. They're both going to be rusty as hell, which is a major worry in itself.
