This isn't a criticism of him at all but hate how much has to go through him for build up. Great defender I think he's shown he is but playing out the back with him is either slow, held onto for ages and given to schar or a ball struck too softly or too hard to hall to do something with.

pretty sure the slow build up at the back is deliberate and attempting to bait a press from the opposition. Most good teams do this.

72/74 passes completed today, 3rd most progressive passer on the pitch after Schar and Bruno. I don’t mind the build up starting with him at all.

Yes. I heard the commentator also say Newcastle were waiting for Villa to make the first move and pass through then once they were out of position.

yep. Villa don’t really press, and that was exaggerated especially when they went down to 10, so we had to be very patient at the back today.

Bloody love that he is holding his own for the most part and looking solid. Lovely story, great lad.

He is not the long term answer but he always gives his all. We have been compact enough to hide/cover the lack of pace. Still something that needs addressing likely in the summer window.

Man City probably have a better 3rd choice CB but are they the only team in the league to have BDB beat?

Also good that we are in no hurry to get Botman back to the team before he's ready unless injuries happen.

We were ahead very early and playing a against a team with a known high line playing and inviting players on to you to make space is a tactic and it was effective as we won and kept a clean sheet. My issue is that ponderous build up is also his game when we are behind and chasing the game and need some speed or cutting edge. Obviously as I say not a criticism of him as a defender just miss having that element available to us without botman.

Think we can agree he is no longer a first team full back option... Not  good for the team or himself.

He literally looks twice the player he was last season and now the real challenge is how he reacts if  / when Botman comes back in the team ahead of him.

To think there was a time were most, including me, didn't ever want to see him back at CB. He's been imperious.

Interested to see how Howe beds Botman back in.

I agree.

And this is a lovely problem for Eddie Howe to ponder.

The fact he’s been so good is really helpful in easing Botman back in. Obviously we all want Botman back, he’s a level above, but he absolutely does not need to be playing every game once he is ‘fit’.

He’s very quietly had a good season so far.

Been class. Blip last season aside (where he was out of position, and should never be played LB again) it’s fair to say he’s been a top signing for us.
