Quality on the other side to compliment Trippier's quality on the right (albeit a bit lower, but still). Starting to understand the reasoning behind being so forthright in strengthening both full back positions now. Will do wonders for our balance. Great defensive performance tonight and very confident on the ball as well. Level headed passer and under rated crosser. Stick Bruno in the middle and all of a sudden you have the ability to pass with quality across the pitch and build attacks from anywhere. Clever.

Can immediately see the logic in bringing him in to protect that left flank from the lack of cover ASM offers.

I thought his distribution in the first half was off at times but overall a very solid debut and, you'd imagine, that LB slot is nailed on to be his after the Villa game is out of the way.

Very good defensive positioning. Keeps that up I guess it may give Trippier a bit more license to bomb forward. He’s not great going forward but at least he’s very good at his primary job. Very happy to have him.

I’m shocked how much I really really like Matt Targett the full back.

It’s like admitting your favourite flavour ice cream is vanilla. It’s dull as funk and unimaginative, but it’s the simplicity and reliability of it. You know what you’re going to get. It pairs well with sauce, sprinkles and other toppings. Fits well with hot brownies, sticky toffee pudding, crumbles, basically all heated desserts. It enables you to appreciate the flair stuff around it.

Matt Targett is vanilla ice cream.

I said this when we signed him but I think he’s underrated offensively as well, has a decent cross on him and is a solid passer. I think people overlook that because he excels defensively; massive upgrade on anything we had in that position. Wouldn’t be averse at all to signing him permanently.

I must have been watching a different first half. To me he looked very assured in possession, mostly playing in the forwards low and hard, but when he couldn't simply opting for the low risk sideway pass. I didn't see any aimless hoofing or sloppy loss of possession. Nothing spectacular, but very solid and assured. Defensively it was much the same except for one moment where he let Coleman just skip by and cross while he stood stationary expecting ASM (ha!) to deal with it.

Know it's only been one game but can't understand why villa didn't want to keep him?   What's wrong with him?

Think I saw some talk that they wanted someone with a bit more going forward but we can ignore that with ASM ahead of him and Trippier opposite.
