Think they were always going to fade but they’ve accumulated enough points to stay up which was the aim. It’ll be interesting to see hiw the get on next season though particularly if they lose several players in the summer but they have recruited well recently.

We owe them one at st James mind.

I can’t help but wonder what’s coming up for them in the next month that might have them on edge

Definitely, and the empty seats yesterday were a good sign of that. The ficklest of bastards - I am sure they'll be back to the low 30,000 attendances, the bews, the carrier bags on the pitch soon enough.

I'm certainly no expert on football finances but is this something similar to what Freddy Shepherd was doing in his final few years as chairman, basically borrowing money based on future income that he was gambling on us definitely having?

Sure that's how we paid the then astronomical £20m fee for Michael Owen.

It was - and it was more than enough to have swathes of our support constantly defend the Hall and Shepherd regime with nonsense about them ‘putting in their own money’.  It’s why we had a massive overdraft and over £100m of debt when Ashley bought the club, all while they’d paid themselves a similar figure in dividends.  They’d mortgaged the future of the club and years of poor signings had us on the verge of ‘doing a Leeds’.

Yeah, I think they spent the full 4-year Northern Rock sponsorship money on him.

If he saw a bargain, he had the money.

You know Freddy Shepherd who comes round with a suitcase? 'Two for a tenner..' 'Yes please, four!'

Correct, NR paid NUFC the full 4 year sponsorship up front at the start of the deal, which was used to buy Owen and Luque. The stadium expansion to 52k was funded via securitisation loans/notes, which were repayable in  full within 60(?) days of a change in ownership. Hence the FCB spitting his dummy out after he bought us.

Seems like they’ve been making all their signings with a Wonga loan…

Run of the mill stuff. They are pretty much safe now, they’ll just be borrowing ahead of next years money coming through in order to buy players in January. Every club does it, even us.

As long as they don’t lose every game til the end of the season…

This is great from post #415 onwards. To be fair, there is an acceptance from lots of them that:

a) they have awful supporters who fight among themselves in the Premier Concourse and leave with 20 minutes left to play

b) there are always lots of empty seats at SoL right from kick off

c) an extension to the SoL is completely unessessary

d) Til the End marketing looks a bit embarrassing now

Not surprised in the least but they've been found out. They were already way ahead in terms of points compared to most metrics when they were getting results, now the results seem inkeeping with performances.
