This is all well and good but they will let us have it and sit deep. We don’t create well in that scenario and then we end up over committing and getting picked off. It’s absolutely the way to play against us

Can honestly say I've not given this derby more than a minute's thought. Plus the actual Sunderland fans I've met in real life are generally sound. Can't speak for the online mob.

 

I want to win it for the 3 points and to finish as high as we can in the league. They rightly beat us at their place, so I want us to do our own job at home to do the same in return. For me, that's about the extent of it.

I don't think the Barca vs Derby discussion is a particularly difficult one.

 

Best case scenario, we win the derby. Brilliant obviously, but I've seen us beat them home and away on numerous occasions. Winning away at Barcelona and getting a Champions League QF? That's something no Newcastle fan in history has experienced.

I really don't want to go into work again having lost another derby. People again playing down the importance of it I would hazard a guess don't work with any of our friends over the river.

 

That said, Barca is a huge opportunity for the club and arguably the most important game in our recent history.

 

As a minimum we can't turn in another pathetic, limp dick performance in the derby like last time. It has to be a lot better and if we're on the end of a flukey win from them we'd just have to live with it.

To be clear, I'm not playing down the significance of it, not if you live up here. Totally agree we have to turn up.

This popped up on TalkSport on Saturday morning. Adrian Durham and a few others absolutely gob smacked that we'd consider Barca the bigger game.

 

I don't get it, in no way is local bragging rights more important than a champion's league knockout tie. Strange thinking

Its that view that's actually gobsmacking. Can only presume being a Peterborough fan where Europe and winning things isn't a factor that like Sunderland fans the pinnacle of football to Durham is winning a derby.

There's no way Liverpool (e.g.) would rather beat Everton than overturn this Galatasaray game and its not as big an achievement to them to get to the CL QFs.

 

Playoffs aside Its only when we've been rubbish and had nothing else that its our biggest game which is where they've always been at.

I just realised, if we'd made it to the League Cup final, which given we won the competition last season, you'd argue we had a decent shot at, than this coming game would have had to have been rearranged for a midweek evening game, which I imagine Northumbria Police wouldn't be best please about.
