+1 If we had paid £10m for Wood no one would really care. We didn't have much of a choice considering the release clause, the fact we were direct competitors with the club he was at, and the situation we were in. People are a little stressed in this thread because it feels like we're a couple pieces away from a real push for the top 8. Imagine if we were in the fucking Championship right now?

I still think Burnley would have stayed up with Wood and Dyche

Who would have thought that we need a CM..

If we sign Maddison he can play CM but more advanced is better for him.  There must be a half decent CM though we can get on loan.  I think Willock, Bruno, Joe are fine as a 3, Longstaff is fine as backup but if we pick up an extra injury who starts?  Can we recall Hayden?

Perhaps this makes Maddison worth slightly more to us now? He obviously doesn't cover the same position or role as Shelvey but he can certainly play in that midfield 3 so counts as an extra body to move people around. Maybe this necessity adds an extra 10m onto our next bid rather than going for another CM entirely.

There is also a certain Brazilian that I know everyone is sick to the back teeth of hearing about.

I will never tire of the thought of LPaqz in a Newcastle shirt alongside Bruno :smitten:

Hayden is gone, leave him be, let him go in peace :icon_salut:

We've played him there before tbf

We've played Hayden and Hendrick there too, they aren't good enough. If we're missing Shelvey for half a season he needs replacing with at least a loan signing, ideally someone like for like.

In Bruce's brainless 5-3-2 at the start of last season, aye. When West Ham, Villa and Southampton wandered through our midfield in consecutive games.

Having watched the Cambridge game, I don’t think it’s too outlandish to say his presence transformed our performance levels, simply through his physicality and tactical understanding

I've said it before but nobody who was at that Cambridge game and witnessed the unstructured mess that was our formation up-close will criticise the Wood signing.

Is he a £25m player? Christ no. But which other options were available for that (or less) that wouldn't need any time to adapt to the PL, with the added bonus of weakening a direct rival? Not a great signing. Maybe not even a particularly good one. But definitely not a bad one.

I didn’t think we’d be in the premier league after witnessing that Cambridge game.
