Think that's a pretty wild choice.  Maddison one best players in prem at the moment.

Never see him press effectively. Not particularly pacy. Plays at his own tempo and another player very strong on one foot and very weak on the other. I think he’d stick out like Shelvey does now and if he’s meant to be fitted into our front three you’ve got to be able to press hard and fast.

What (admittedly little) I’ve seen of Pedro is good pace, comfortable using both feet so could cover across the frontline. Physically strong so would offer more aerially and great footwork and balance.

Don’t get me wrong Maddison is a very good player but all round Pedro looks a lovely footballer.

Basically confirming what I’d read previously…

I’m sorry but Maddison is not ‘very strong on one foot and very weak on the other’.

I’m pretty sure he’s scored against us from outside the box with both his right and left foot.

Desperate in case we beat them to another ‘Bruno’ again.

Didn't notice the Chronicle linking us with Jonathan David again last week. Seems unlikely to me. A good long term Wilson replacement though maybe to play off Isak but unless he is playing AM I don't know where he fits in this year.

9 in 15, 3 Assists and 22 years old. He'd be mint as Wilson's replacement and he pairs well with someone like Isak. (See his play with Cyle Larin on the Canadian National Team)

He’s scored a few with left foot but wasn’t really the point I was making. More his playing and passing style. Look forward to seeing him up against us this season as he usually does well against us.

I like Maddison, but does he suit our style of play and intensity without the ball?

It's the reason I don't see Maxi staying much longer. Maddison is a little one paced, no?

Maybe thats just my view. I'd rather add more legs in the DM role and push Bruno forward and get Diaby / Mudryk...

I know what you mean but I think he’s pretty adaptable position wise even if he’s different to what we already have. I think he’d be a tremendous signing and Howe would be able to coach him massively to our style too and he’d give us that player to really open teams up at home too.

I have no qualms about who NUFC signs in january, I have 100% trust in them at the moment due to their 100% success in the signings made to date.

My own opinion is that we will probably sell ASM and buy perhaps two attacking wingers/Nº10 types (Diaby/maddison/Mudryk...). I just can´t see ASM turning into a pressing beast any time soon.

I think we will also bring in a few younger "stars" (perrone -argentina?/kuol/others) who can grow into the team...

You've summarised the dilemma there.

If someone had told me a year ago that we'd have a very effective pressing game, I'd have laughed. We didn't press at all, and the players we've brought in, you wouldn't say would be ones that would change that. None of our midfield players have pace and we don't have a DM, which I had thought was essential. Eddie has achieved a strong press by an effective fitness programme and by good organisation. He seems to have developed in our team a pack-like instinct about when to commit to the press. So I wonder whether he can do a similar transformation with Maddison, who you rightly say isn't obviously suited to that kind of aggressive game.

The other orthodoxy that Eddie is challenging is the need for a specialist DM to protect the back line. I had often thought that it was a double edged sword, because a DM tends to see a lot of the ball, and if they can't use it well then the creative aspect of your team is hampered. And if you're pressuring the ball further upfield, then you don't need someone to defend the back line so much.

On a related point, that's why I find Southgate's commitment to two DMs in Phillips and Rice so frustrating.

Agree completely, got my doubts about Maddison, not as a footballer but as suited to our way of play. The only thing is though if Bruno got injured would we have that creative spark to see a pass, not so sure and there’s an argument that he could be useful in tight games at home when we need to break down a packed defence. We would lose a lot of physicality in midfield by dropping Longstaff or Joelinton at the minute, so not sure how he fits in especially for what he’d cost.

Does he suit our style ? Probably not right now. More importantly would he fit the way Eddie sees us playing in the future ? Has he the capacity to change his game the way Eddie wants it given that the way we play now will not be the finished article.

To me Kovacic is the type of midfielder we need. Great technique and mixture of attributes. Obviously I doubt he’d be available but a player of that ilk as he could interchange positions with Bruno and Joelinton. Basically an upgrade on Longstaff. Maddison I’d imagine would have to play in the front three which like I’ve said doesn’t suite our high end press. Play him in the middle three and I think you’d compromise Bruno and create more problems than you solve.

Not sure about Maddison not fitting our style argument... Let's be honest he's no slower than Longstaff or Bruno and they fit in quite well with it.

I wouldn't have believed this time last season even that we would be seeing the players Bruce had playing the way they are now. It might take a little bit to adjust but I think he could fit in if he has the right attitude and desire to play like the rest of the team.

I think that’s key to Eddie, attitude and desire. If he sees capability, with the right desire and attitude. I believe he’ll believe he can fit the player into our system with coaching. What a fucking manager he is!
