Surely they replace Shelvey?

No. I think they will take the gamble.

Joelinton, Longstaff, Bruno, Willock and Anderson as CMs

Gordon and Isak as number 10s, if we wanted to tweak the system.

Caulkin:

"Newcastle United have been looking at potential midfield loan deals following the arrival of Anthony Gordon and Harrison Ashby this month, but at this stage any further addition looks unlikely.

Conor Gallagher has been discussed, but Chelsea view Newcastle as direct rivals for a top-four place and are not prepared to do business.

There is recognition internally that they are susceptible to injury in the centre of the pitch but with so few quality, affordable defensive midfielders on the market, they have refused to deviate from their long-term targets.

Chelsea are rolling the dice, but that is not Newcastle’s way."

Was that not about tapping up a young player from another academy or something like that

"Chelsea are accused of having played youngsters -- most of them kids on trial -- in their youth teams without registering them. FIFA rules state that they need to have the requisite paperwork, even though the football association, which not coincidentally has also been found to be in breach, have rather more relaxed rules, which is why they are likely to join Chelsea in their appeal."

A €10M fine is the worst punishment to date for FFP. €10M. For PSG. They're paying £645M a year in wages.

We’re not bringing anyone in unless it’s a loan for someone happy to sit on the bench unless needed.

We’re gambling on fitness and form hoping it’s enough to get us into Europe.

It makes sense in that we’re not back filling Shelvey and Wood with little upgrades and taking up squad places for summer targets.

Gotta hope it pays off.

Latest Newcastle United update by Luke Edwards

The messages coming out of Newcastle United suggest they could well be done in this transfer window with attempts to bring in a midfield player on loan continuing to be frustrated.

A last day enquiry for Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher has once again failed to gain any sort approval from the London club and it looks like the 22-year-old will not be joining the Magpies even if he is allowed to leave before the 11pm deadline.

Newcastle’s recruitment team are still making calls to see if they can loan a defensive midfielder, so it is not quite the end of their work, but there is a growing sense of calm behind the scenes.

Manager Eddie Howe has had several meetings with Director of Football Dan Ashworth and members of the Newcastle board in the last few days and they are simply unable to get players on their pre-existing wanted list,

There has been no sense of panic despite the loss of Jonjo Shelvey and Chris Wood this month, with the versatility of new signing Anthony Gordon meaning they can drop Joelinton back into midfield if they suffer injuries in that department.

As a result, instead of paying inflated fees for targets in the middle of winter, Newcastle seem content to wait until the summer.

It was never their plan to spend much money this month as they want to ensure their summer transfer kitty is as large as possible under Financial Fair Play Rules.

Their delusion is staggering. They're finishing nowhere near top 4.

A harsh 5. For me @The Butcher nailed it earlier.  Just don't think we've done enough coming in. Certainly not to fight for a CL place and if that's where they want to go, then this is an open goal for them and we seem to be passing up on it. They might not get a chance like this for another 3-4 seasons.

I don’t get this at all. Why on earth would we not be challenging for the CL over the next 3/4 seasons?

Because another 6 clubs, all with better starting points and backing from the footballing God's will want to stop us.

See what happened when Leicester challenged the elite. The ESL was born.

Of course they will. But to suggest we won’t be challenging for the CL over the next 3/4 years is mental.

This isn’t Pardew’s 5th place season - we aren’t going anywhere and this is a long term thing.

Lets take a moment to recognize how far we have come in a short space. An initial outlay of £43m is now considered 'not much money'.
