Its extremely boring these days, far too sanitised, commercialised and very uncompetitive. I don’t enjoy it at all. I still sometimes watch old MOTD's on YT from like 1998-2000 era cause I remember as a kid been allowed to stay up to watch them from time to time and been absolutely buzzing for it Also as I type this I've just remembered teletext. 302 for football news and 303 for the scores right? I remember I'd goto 303 on a Saturday during the game every 10-15 minutes and I'd plant my face right up to my T.V at the far left and gradually move it the right to see the scores revealing.... First half of last season was just brilliant. Might've been Championship football but it was the most enthusiasm I've felt for the Toon since I've been a fan, albeit that's a short while compared to some of you lot. Before Rafa, I wasn't apathetic but I was a bit less arsed. Under McClaren especially. For Pardew you could just despise the man after the Reading home defeat or the end of 2012/13 completely, and Carver you could laugh at. McClaren was just an uninspiring, wet flannel. Plenty of enjoyment can be found in La Liga and Serie A. I agree, I enjoy following these leagues much more than the Premier League at the moment. Despite dominance of a particular club/clubs at the top, there feels like there's more competition further down the table and that games between mid-table clubs actually mean something, might lead to one of them having a memorable season. Teams like Sociedad, Betis, Atalanta, Sampdoria, Celta, Udinese are interesting teams who you've got a good chance of seeing an entertaining match from. The bottom (almost) three quarters of the Premier League this season is going to be like one of those African leagues where they all finish within about five points of each other. None of them are going to think they've had a good season, none of them are any good, none of them are worth watching, none of them can beat the teams above them. They just nick points off each other here and there, attempt damage limitation when anyone above Leicester turns up and the three that go down are no better or worse than the other ten, they're just the ones still standing when the music happens to stop after game 38. I've been watching quite abit of Ligue 1 this season. Particularly St Etienne and Lille as they are both just above the drop. French teams, excluding Caen, generally play to win, not to lose. To many PL teams are looking down rather than up and it's f***ing boring now watching 0-0s / 1-0s and matches with 3 shots on target. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
ponsaelius Posted January 27, 2018 Share Posted January 27, 2018 The sheer amount of money that is at stake if a club is relegated now is having an inverse effect on the quality at the bottom end of the table IMO. There is huge sums being thrown at players, and the quality (or at least raw financial value) of squads is way higher than any other league, but the standard of play is seeing diminishing returns as a result of what's at stake. The kind of people who are getting involved in buying clubs (Ashley is of course one example) are so often predatory, with zero emotional connection to the clubs, where the reason they're getting involved is because of the TV money gravy train. This encourages a safety at all costs mentality that spreads down to boardroom decision making, to the coaching level, and to the playing staff. Now I don't think this terror in the face of relegation is a particularly unique thing about the English game. I've followed Italian football long enough to know that managerial turnover for struggling teams there borders on insanity. However I think there is a particular intensity that the current finances of the PL are having on the way club's operate and the way teams play. Teams in Spain, Germany and Italy aren't quite as terrified of relegation because the impact of it isn't quite so disastrous and many of them are set up structurally in a way that transition to the 2nd tier is manageable. It means the lower and mid-table teams have (IMO) a bit more freedom about the way they play, the trust they place in implementing a style of play, and also a trust they have in throwing in young players at the deep end. If a big Italian or Spanish team gets sucked into relegation there's a pretty good chance they can re-adjust and bounce back in a thinly spread second tier.
