to encourage them and to encourage playing your better players in them?

But even if you win it hurts your ranking....

We failed to beat Scotland at Wembley, which would have had a negative impact on our ranking. We shouldn't be able to make up those points by arranging a friendly with San Marino.

But that's part of the point of the article. Winning friendlies doesn't make up points - it leaves you worse off.

Isn't that his point? If you do shit in games that matter you shouldn't be able to artificially inflate your ranking by beating shit teams in friendlies - which you can't.

It's a complex situation, only fixed by doing away with friendlies altogether tbh.

The point is you can win all your friendlies and you'll be worse off than a team that didn't play any at all.

For an object lesson in this principle, the FA needs to look no further than just across Offa’s Dyke. In June 2014, after losing a friendly against Holland 2-0, Wales were ranked 41st in the world. Chris Coleman’s team then went 17 months without playing another friendly and jumped all the way up to eighth (earning themselves a top seeding for 2018 World Cup qualifying). Their results in that period were good if not spectacular — five wins and three draws — but a key factor was their calculated avoidance of average-killing friendlies.

But coming up with a formula that works is not so simple because you shouldn't be able to increase your ranking by playing and winning a load of friendlies, so it kind of makes sense.

Just need to get rid of friendlies or remove them altogether from ranking calculations.

The only reason I can see to include friendlies in the rankings at all is for teams who play few or no competitive games.  That's likely to be the smallest and worst virtually pub teams in FIFA who won't get anywhere near qualification, never mind a seeding.  Make it competitive games only, the current system is silly.

Is Roy Keane not massively overrated like?

I mean there's an obvious favouritism towards 'golden era' Premiership players but even amongst that lot.

EDIT: Wrote this before seeing those comments [emoji38]

Absolutely no chance Keane was overrated like, I'd say his footballing ability at times was actually underrated. Phenomenal player in his prime.

I saw that the other day and thought it was fair enough if it wasn't in order. If that's in order it's nonsense like.

Depends on how you view longevity vs. peak. Has anyone had a season as good as Suarez's last season at Liverpool?

Yeah, but only Ronaldo, Shearer, and possibly Schmeichel imo.

Imagine having a conversation about the best premier league player of all time and someone saying Ryan Giggs though. I can't take it seriously when you consider the other options.
