Aye, rush could play anywhere (not even sure why this distinction was made in hindsight, did we tell our mates in goal they had to stay back :lol:) whereas fly meant anyone could be keeper as long as they called it before touching the ball with their hands.

 

Led to some amusing ball juggling between 2-3 people each calling keeper in turn.

Now I think about it I think ours was similar.

 

Rush= a certain outfield player was the only one allowed to be keeper

 

Fly= anyone could be keeper

 

 

Rush keeper was one guy, “goalie-when-needed” was anybody.

I think for us, rush keeper was where the keeper could come out and play but was still the only person who could use his hands. Fly-and-rush was where anyone could be the keeper.

 

This is how it worked between Amble and Ashington in my experience, although the latter was just simply Fly Keeper :thup: I later came to realise that Rush Keeper was actually just regular football
