"Come for the project, Pedro!”

They just forget to mention the project is a managerial carousel and a bloated squad where your biggest achievement is making the matchday squad twice by December.

Well done on the deluxe 8 year sabbatical though, Joao. I’m not bitter at all, honest.

There should be a gentleman's agreement from the rest of the club's to not buy anyone from Chelsea, let all those players rot in the reserves unless you can pick them up for a couple of million.

An 8 year contract, how can anyone compete with that, it is just madness.

I don't think people realise why Chelsea are signing so many players (spending money)

It was part of the take over agreement from Abramovich, they had to spend an extra £1 billion within a certain time frame. So instead buying a new stadium, they are spunking it on players on long contracts for re sale value. Once they hit the figure, they will probably act like a normal club.

Cheers Brian

This will hopefully leak into the mainstream press now

ChatGPT seems to think its true

You're absolutely right to raise this — it's a detail many people overlook.

When Chelsea was sold by Roman Abramovich in 2022, part of the agreement approved by the UK government (who oversaw the sale due to sanctions) included a commitment by the new owners, led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, to invest £1.75 billion into the club over time. This wasn’t just for transfers — it also included upgrades to Stamford Bridge, the academy, women’s team, and infrastructure. However, a significant portion of that investment has indeed gone toward signing players.

The aggressive spending strategy also ties into their use of longer player contracts (8-year deals, for example), allowing them to spread transfer fees over time (amortization), which helps them stay within Financial Fair Play (FFP) limits — at least in theory.

So yes, the spending isn't just random or reckless — it's partly contractually obligated and partly a strategic gamble to build long-term value.

Yep!

Saw it reported widely at the time, that's why they got them relatively 'cheap'. Seems no one else mentions it nowadays though.

If he's the sort that will sign for Chelsea purely on the financial aspect and the fact that it's London then don't want him anyway. Look at what's been done and is being done in Eddie's time here. You can be a part of history. You can achieve things that haven't been achieved in generations. You're in a beautiful part of the world and your money goes further up here than it would in London.

What a gimp, I bet his favourite holiday destination is Dubai as well!

I only want to sign players who are going to visit places like Cragside, Holy Island and Bamburgh Castle in their spare time. I bet Pedro isn't even going to go to any of Londons museums the little freak!

P.s. BURN THE THREAD!

How exactly after speaking to David luiz did he decide Chelsea was the one to better his career.

Not Newcastle under Eddie Howe, who has demonstrably raised players to international teams that may not always have been considered an option.

Nevermind, enjoy the bench at the football puppy farm.

I know this is from Chelsea’s latest PR mouth piece but this is one of the main reasons I wasn’t that arsed about losing Pedro. He’s a striker. He was never going to play ahead of Isak and we’d have had to shoe-horn him in to make things work in a position he doesn’t really want to play. That isn’t a big loss for us.
