Really happy this kid is at least having a good run of fitness and some joy and success for the under 21s to build up his confidence.

Think he should have played there when he first came in from Australia, before then looking at loans for him afterwards. To give him a chance to settle and acclimate to such a big change.

If he goes out on loan, he really has to go to the perfect club. A Scottish side or English lower leagues, probably aren’t in the mood for a young, lightweight baller.

Suppose that Dutch team he went to should have been the one.

its a head scratcher. Happy he’s enjoying u-21 though. Must be a relief for him to be around people his own age.

Did he not have to go on loan for some reason? Not played a high enough percentage of internationals or similar. But otherwise the general premise is spot on, just shows how fine a line between success and failure can be

He went on loan to Scotland, so he definitely had a work permit for the UK.

He went to Hearts because it wasn't far from Newcastle and there were a few Aussies in the team to help with acclimatisation (he'd just turned 18 and had never lived away from home).

Hearts were in a scrap on the table so didn't trust him with a lot of minutes - even though he did do some damage in the minutes he got.

Volendam was a disaster. The youth employing manager who signed him was quickly sacked, they were in a relegation fight, and the pragmatic new manager didn't trust him despite a wonder goal and a couple of excellent assists in his earlier games.

Then he got injured for a while, back in Newcastle, but is finally fit and showing his genuine quality. I think he's 20 now so is old enough to be in the first team squad if good enough to keep someone else out. If not, one more loan beckons and it has to be the one that finally works to get him tested against men in a decent league. Portsmouth - if they survive - have a number of Aussies in their ranks - if that's still important for his settling.

Let's not forget this is the kid that tore Barcelona apart (in a friendly) and it was Barca most vying with NUFC for his signature. He has a lot of ability and I'm just delighted that he's injury free and regaining his mojo.

I've never been convinced him having Australians around him is particularly good for him. Possibly even a negative.

We have better coaches at the club then bloody hearts and volendam keep him here let him get upto speed with the English game then he can go on loan.

I mean, he didn’t like - he came off the bench for the ‘A League All Stars’ and spaffed a chance to score, hit the bar, and Xavi gave him some praise after the game.  This is the ‘A League All Stars’ that NUFC took so seriously that we played our kids against them.  It’s a training match which European sides do for daft money - no-one should take any part of it seriously.

The lad couldn’t get a regular start for the Mariners, and couldn’t step up to the Dutch or Scottish leagues.  Obviously I’d like to see it work out for him, but the truth is that the lad would’ve been better off staying at CCM and seeing if he could develop rather than being shipped off to England far too early on in his development.  He was raw and he’s been hopelessly mishandled by Ameobi; it’s now a couple of years since he was last selected for Australia, and I’d have thought if he’d stayed he’d have added a few more caps.  If anything NUFC - if they wanted him - would’ve been better off loaning him back to the A-League.

He’s still reasonably young and there’s time yet - but I wouldn’t be loaning him to the ‘Championship’ at this point; it’s still too high a level based upon past experience.  He needs a loan to a third or fourth tier club for a short time to see if he has the talent.

It did Anderson good going to Bristol Rovers - that’s the level this lad should be tried at.

It was still a full strength Barca team, he ran straight through them about three times and they were definitely taking it seriously after going behind. Xavi gave him big praise and then tried to sign him. I understand he chose NUFC because the EPL is far more visible in Oz than La Liga.

Other than that, I completely agree. He should have stayed at least one more year in Oz. As for caps - he won't be selected if he's not playing at a visible and decent level. I do think he's good enough to be tried in the Championship though - he's a lot better than both Yengi and Waddingham at Portsmouth. But if he can't cut it there at 20 - 21 next year - then maybe he won't make it in Europe after all.

Nice play in the lead up to that.

Wonderful strike at the end!

Lovely cross field ball from Munda.

Almost a "worldy"...

Confidence is a wonderful thing in football. If he’s rediscovered that and the talent scouting was correct, there can still be a good player. Good enough to play for us as a top 6 side different debate, but one where we can get a good fee and he makes a long successful career in Europe.

"The most important thing for me is to be able to play [senior] football... it won't be that easy to jump from the under-21s at Newcastle to a first team squad which could be in the Champions League," he told ESPN.

"For the summer, I'm not really sure what's going to happen in terms of my next move ... but I'd say [senior] football is the ultimate goal."

Hope the lad makes it somewhere and has a decent career.

"In the past couple months, I've played probably the most 90 minutes I have played in my whole career, back-to-back consecutive games, which is what any young player needs ... I haven't had that in literally my whole professional career.

"Now I'm able to run up and down for 90 minutes every week ... I think I played less than five 90-minute matches from 17 until 20 years old. It's crazy because that's what young players need the most: minutes and full games."

Let's try and do it better the next time we have one like this... We got him when he was judged as raw by a country that doesn't even much like football.
