Likelylad
It just feels very reflective modern society. “Content creators” holding up Vinicius Jnr’s shirt on the red carpet, random players whinging on social media about the result and Real players not attending as their team mate didn’t win. Pretty pathetic all round tbh.

Pata
I'm all for the award going to someone who didn't score most goals once in a while, especially when Rodri has been ridiculously good for so long.

ponsaelius
Rodri is obviously an exceptional footballer but I still think it reflects pretty negatively on the level of football as of right now, in terms of what you would consider to be superstar talent, that he's Ballon D'or winner and it isn't really questionable. Big game players in high profile cups tend to win these awards. Conceded 1 goal in the Copa América which he won, winning a(nother) pelanty shootout along the way. Is he the best in the world? Probably not. Is he an elite level keeper who performs on the big stage? Absolutely. Was hardly going to be Unai Simon or the Real backup who came 2nd and 3rd and then the rest are alsorans. Segun Oluwaniyi
Rodri went off injured at halftime of the Euros Final; his replacement came on, played fantastically well, and scored the winner. If Oyarzabal had instead come on, had a shocker, and handed the title to England, I feel like Rodri would not have won the award. Vini should have won, imo, but he wasn't at a level where it was undisputed. With Rodri, it just seems like they wanted to reward a player with both club and international success, and he was the best option from Spain or Argentina. It goes both ways though, Real were pretty lucky against Man City in the QF. If they get knocked out Vini has no chance of winning the award.
nufcjb
Real want to create their own awards now with Barca? The Super Balon d'Or? Can nominate themselves and vote themselves too. and have a category just for them too.

Agreed. I also think that Vinicius Jr and Real Madrid throwing their toys out the pram sums it up. Would barely be top 10 in some of the previous golden years. Tiresias
I think it reflects football fans being a bit more nerdy now and valuing technical midfielders more than flair attackers thanks to so much of the coverage being on 'genius tactical managers' and tactics so of course the players everyone loves moves towards players like Rhodri and Modric. I do think the trend definitely means there are a lot less high quality flair attackers as managers care less about them now. Ancelotti may the last great coach who sees it his job to make all his star players happy and fit them on the pitch somehow. Young player coming through who can listen to complicated tactical instructions and keep up technically with the other players is going to get into the first team quicker than someone who does nothing half the match but occaisionally scores a worldie. It's also just an award, like all others, always going to be more people unhappy than happy with it. Real Madrid's reaction has been spectacularly petty

Kimbo
So Bellingham won La Liga player of the year and Real Madrid player of the year, but Real Madrid are outraged that Vinicius didn’t win the Ballon D’Or. Maybe give him your own club awards if you think he was the best player in the world?
AyeDubbleYoo
Find this whole debate childish and pointless. Football is a team game anyway, impossible to choose who the individual best player is unless there's an all-time great like Messi around. People posting in support of Vini as if he's been persecuted or something. Ridiculous all round.
alexf
I saw el clasico live last week, having not watched that fixture for many years. Have to say it was a real eye opener. I grew up in the era watching the likes of R9, Zidane, Ronaldinho etc and then later the Messi/Ronaldo matches ofcourse. Might be biased but I came away thinking that "back in my day" the standard was so much higher. I thought if this is the best we have to offer in this era then it's nothing special. The amount of ridiculous basic offsides by Mbappe despite him being as fast as he is. Then some of the finishing, especially one particular effort from Vini Jr was so poor. Just made me realise today's game is just more about are you an athlete first and foremost. This game was so open with poor defending all over and basically who can break the lines and counter best. Turns out Barca, who had a seasoned finisher in Lewandowski to get them ahead. I'm sure the strikers of the past would score an absolute boat load in this era. It's probably why Haaland stands alone in comparison to most statistically as he's a throw back to the past. Edited October 29, 2024 by alexf
