Here’s the trajectory chart, constructed in the summer and updated as of end of October. This shows projected route towards a top eight finish, taking account of opposite quality (four tiers based on last season’s finishing position and whether games fall home or away) and using 56 points as a target. Unsurprisingly we are ahead of the curve (by three points). Anything we get in the two November games is a bonus.

6 points from the next 5 games then. I'm still not able to go to an away game expecting a win, so can see us not getting 3 at Southampton. But between all those games I'd fancy us to get 5 or 6 points.

Im actually pretty confident of overpowering Chelsea at home. Their defence isn’t at it this season and the atmosphere at St James will be ludicrous. We’ll hopefully have a fully fit Saint by then too ?

For some reason I woke up dreaming about how I need to work our cumulative and average goal difference during the Ashley years compared to now

 

As you can probably guess, it's horrific.

 

Over 12 seasons it's:

 

-168 cumulative
-14 average

 

Even if you include the +55 and +45 Championship seasons it's:

 

-68 cumulative 

-5 average 

 

The first proper season without Ashley and we've immediately bettered our goal difference for this stage of the season than at any time in the Premier League under him.

 

It's proper Théodin comes out from under Saruman's spell level stuff.

That points total for 2022 is absolutely absurd, when you consider what went before it. Defies belief what Howe has done to transform this club. I know we’ve had great buy-in from the owners, made some great transfers etc and it requires everyone pulling in the same direction to have this sort of success but it all comes back to one man eventually and that’s Howe

Its often said that this club is like a juggernaut once the momentum builds and everyone pulls in the same direction. Add to your list the likes of Wor Flags and the crowd as a whole, coupled with the general feeling of something special brewing in the City and you get that huge sense of everyone pulling together.

 

Of course the opposite is true when we are fragmented and on a downturn, it takes a lot to stop the rot.

Just looked detail at our record under Eddie Howe and his merry band. Two time periods. Since, first his official first game in charge, Norwich at home. Second, allowing him a six game period/month or so to have an influence, since January this year. 
 

First/Total: P38, W19, D10, L 9, Pts 67; F53, A43, GD10. Points per game (PPG) 1.76.

 

2022 only:

P32, W18, D8, L6, Pts 62; F49, A30, GD 19. PPG 1.94.

 

In the 30 EPL seasons to date, 1.94 PPG would have been enough for a 2nd place finish on 6 occasions; 3rd  16 times; 4th 26 times; and enough for 5th on 29 of the 30. If within one season, it would represent our second best return (2.05 ppg in 95-96 was our best;  2nd in 96-97 was less, 1.79ppg). 
 

There can be no doubt that we are, and have been for 32 games, on top four form. Almost nailed on for top six ‘if’ it continues. Big if, but much better to be able to say we just need to keep doing what we are going, this season and last, rather than aspiring to a level of performance we have yet to hit.

I predicted we’d surprise people, including ourselves. We’re 4th on merit and on the back of injury problems. When Isak, St Max are back and Almiron tearing things up in a way no one expected suggests that things are only going to get better. Longstaff is clearly doing what Howe wants him to as well. It might be a stretch to say it this early but top four is a possibility with the current squad and a fair wind. Any transfers in January are a bonus. 
best defence in the league, one be defeat  and I think third best goal difference? That’s top four form.

Really hope we end before the WC break with 2 wins, but i'd be 100% happy with a win and draw. 1 loss before the cup only feels very very important to me.
