Or Chelsea drop out of top 8 and win it.
Decky
Ah yeah I misinterpreted it. There's guaranteed to be an 8th English team but it might not necessarily be 8th in the league getting it.

Been the only highlight of the season watching our CL games Agreed but that was down to the calibre of the competition and the teams we were playing. The atmosphere when we played Qarabag at home was a bit flat and the caliber of team who we'd be playing would be worse than that. You also can't assume we'd even win it. Superior Acuña
Didn’t remember that Tottenham went out in the old group stage when they were in it Villa knocked out by Olympiacos in the semi. Leicester by Roma in the semi (L entered later as Europa drop outs) West Ham and Chelsea won it.

black_n_white
Looking at the table we are now in a ‘mini’ league with Brentford, Everton, Fulham, Brighton, Sunderland, Bournemouth and Palace. Top two get Europe?

Yes it's not the Champions League or the Europa League, but it's still a competition that requires you to either win a domestic trophy in England or be in the top 30 odd percent of clubs in the countries top division just to qualify for it. Is it really any less prestigious as the League Cup or FA Cup these days? You could potentially play lesser opposition in those too until the later stages, teams a lot worse than Conference League sides. Chelsea got to the semi final of the FA Cup by beating Port Vale at the weekend for example. It's far lower than the FA or League Cup I'd say. When we won the League Cup last season we had to beat Nottm Forest, Wimbledon, Chelsea, Brentford, Arsenal over 2 legs and the Liverpool in the Final. To compare Chelseas run to Conference League glory they had to overcome the likes of Shamrock Rovers, Astana and Noah. Even their Semi Final opponents were pretty moderate in Djurgardens. Not really arsed either way if we qualify for it or not. It's a competition that we'd be the favourites to win but it has no real prestige. Would be a good place to blood some youngsters and give them plenty of game time to see what they are made of, especially in the group phase, if Howe was that way inclined and winning it does guarantee a Europa League spot which is definitely worth being involved in. ramirez
Plus point of conference would be progression in league cup, also the games are a bit more spread out with 6 instead of 8, although qualifiers in august where it may seem more of a novelty than fatigue. Moose
That'll be that then. Such a shame when you see that the European places were there for the taking. It might be a blessing in disguise cause this squad of players clearly can't handle European fixtures while maintaining league form. But if we're going to be a perennial CL team by 2030 (no sniggering at the back!) then we need to break the cycle of: No Europe=Good league season, Europe=Bad league season. The true big clubs can juggle both competitions, our leadership talk a good game but in practice we're a footballing paper tiger. While I'm on the topic, the clubs hierarchy need to knock all this "best club in the world by ...." talk right on the fucking head. It's embarrassing. Superior Acuña
So I know it Villa win the Europa AND come 5th (specifically), 6th gets CL. Dos England still get 2 Europa and 1 Conf league places then (ie Europe could go down to 9th)? Edited April 25 by Superior Acuña

It is quite plausible 9th place this season will qualify for Conference League, if an English team wins the Europa but I highly doubt we will finish that high in the table Edited April 27 by kenlau88210

Coffee_Johnny
Prediction chart from pre-season, showing when we 'should' pick up required amount of points (taking into account difficulty of opponents and whether home or away etc). No surprises to see how far off it we are at end of April. We're actually, for the first time in recent years, six points below our NUFC PL era average for the same time period, assuming same number of games played.
