Anthony Gordon

Further to this; after watching the blow comp, I'm convinced he's got Gordon in as a secondary option for when Willock is out. They don't overlap exactly, but a lot of the same general skills.

He has arguably done better when played further in field and I think had Willock and Joelinton been injured a couple of matches earlier we'd have seen alot more of him in that number 8 position. I'm still very intrigued to see what progress he makes over the summer.

I've said for a while that I can't see his long term future as a winger. He hasn't the trickery. However, I don't really see him as a traditional playmaker either.

I suspect he will end up as a jack of all trades, someone who can slot in anywhere and play the team game. However, if Howe can get him to continue to make the type of run he did yesterday, then he will get goals and we've seen a few times that he can find a cute pass.

There's something there with Gordon, I just don't know what and how much or where he best fits in. Loads of questions for Howe to answer but I'd back Eddie to answer them all.

I know Howe might change tack if he were to get more elite players for more defined, specialist roles to work with. But it seems he has been favouring athletes, runners and height a lot of the time and that we’ve not been too rigid with positions in the traditional sense.

We don’t really play with a playmaker or number 10 type or out and out wingers, for that matter. So that might help him. But I agree he hasn’t yet looked suited to playing out wide in our current set up.

The fact he can press effectively and he’s fast is a good starting point for Howe to work with, I guess. He’s shown some flashes on the ball like you mention. But it does feel like he is going to play a more hybrid role. The same way Willock and Joelinton have done at times this season. Usually very effectively and all.

EDIT: I like that he tries to play off both feet, when he needs to. Always annoys me that more pro footballers don’t do it and take a punt (literally at times) on their weaker foot.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hopefully he can improve his fitness in pre season. Don’t have that many issues around his talent (even if he was a bit overpriced because of his nationality) but him blowing out his arse after playing for 20 minutes is a bit worrying. Hopefully just due to mismanagement from his time under Lampard, but certainly something he needs to improve on

Any news on a broadcaster for this? Sky usually show it, but they've cut back on their international football. I just signed up to Viaplay today for a month so while it would be very niche and far less eyes on it, I wouldn't mind them snapping them up late and getting more value for my sub.

Yeah it's good that he's included in the squad but ideally he would've been able to have a full preseason with us, it would've been very beneficial. I just hope he doesn't end up having to play catch up again.

It's not a situaton he could really 'win'.

He goes and he risks injury and missing out on pre season.

He pulls out and it's the same attitude he shown in those last few weeks at Everton, with a certain section of fans wanting him executed for daring to disrespect those who laid down their lives to beat Europe in two world wars.

Hopefully at the very least what he said in his last interview regarding coming back really fit, will be the benefit of the u21 games.

He's already had time with the team, so will have a decent idea of what is expected of him. U21 tournament could be done for him by the end of this month I believe, so potentially 45 days before the season starts.

Any ideas for when our pre season starts training wise?

Personally think his NUFC career will be pretty short if we're chasing players of Barella's quality. His opportunities to shine will be too infrequent for someone as inconsistent as he is. Don't think he's a bad player, he's just not good enough for us.

Wish he'd scored sooner than the Chelsea game.

This is such a shortsighted comment.

Agree. It is likely Gordon will be here for a long time even if just a squad player. He is young and has so much potential. He’s quick and looks good on the ball. He just needs some more coaching and he has the chance to become great.

I think some of our fans need to give him a chance and I really don’t get the negativity towards him. It’s bunkers.

We really don’t have many first team homegrown players under the age of 30 other than Longstaff and Willock so the signing is good planning for the future.

Agree with most of what's been said today. Think he will be a big player for us next season. The way he spoke after the Chelsea game about his fitness and wanting to get better makes me think his season has actually started now with the U21's. When that's done I can see him wanting to join up with the squad (who will be back for pre-season by then) right away rather than having any sort of break. A player with the pace Gordon has matched up with the fitness Howe & coaching team demand could be devastating.
