Would disagree with that. It's far worse nowadays. It has to be. It's a different type of fan who goes nowadays. An older, far more reserved type. It's a far more diluted experience than it used to be when I first started going in the 80s.

I made a point the other week that even that roar that builds when we're attacking has even started to disappear. That's probably the most noticeable thing for me. The crowd don't give the players anywhere near the encouragement they used to. By the same tone we don't put anywhere near as much pressure on referees as we used to either. All of that contributes to atmosphere. It's not just about singing songs.

Tbf I wasn’t comparing to the ‘80s WM, was just talking about the last couple of decades

Woeful tonight. Really, really poor.

I was stood in the back row of the Gallowgate West Corner and a few of us were trying our best, but it’s like pulling hens teeth.

The St James Park atmosphere’s not pinin'! It’s passed on! The noise is no more! It has ceased to be! It has expired and gone to meet its maker!

The ground’s a stiff! Bereft of life, it rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed fans to their seats they’d be pushing up the daisies! Their metabolic processes are now 'istory!

The atmosphere is off the twig! It’s kicked the bucket, It’s shuffled off its mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible

First time in the corner tonight and I absolutely loved being there and it's easily the best way to experience a match - standing up and bellowing away until I've got a headache. Wasn't blown away by the atmosphere but at least the vibe seemed positive, if quiet at times. Very little whinging, until Elanga had the temerity to play a backwards pass.

I know he gets plenty of it around these parts but I need to kiss @Heron's arse again. The effort with the flags and then the effort to sing and sing and sing and sing. Fair fucking fucks, man. You were in my eyeline to my right and I did my best to match you until I started to feel unwell.

Haha thank you mate but I'm just doing what I feel we should all do tbh.

Farfetched as it may seem to consumers of the game, we are all our own managers. What benefit do folk think having a mental rant against Elanga is having? He's got no confidence. He needs his confidence building. If anything we should be singing for him more not less. That's because he is demonstrating the right attitude but not the right form or ability. When people don't display the right attitude that's when we should be sweary.

You cannot blame folk for not having a good time of it or not being talented enough but you sure as hell can when they're being disruptive or lazy.

I thought the crowd were probably a bit better than expected tonight, I was worried for Howe and wasn't really in the mood to argue with folk but it had to be behind him and the players and it was. We got our reward for it.

I simply do not subscribe to the "I pay to be entertained" mentality. I pay to see my team try to win. Each to their own though

I don’t think Local Hero is much of an issue beyond being shite.

The atmosphere today doesn’t sound any better or worse than it has in decades

I agree. You watch games at SJP on TV from the 70s and 80s and much of the time it was poor

Thought the atmosphere was poor - was sat in level 4. Not helped by the game being pretty dull but still poor.

Some people, and I mean a lot of people really, pay to go in there and sit in pure silence for 90 odd minutes. What enjoyment do they get?

Atmosphere was pretty dreadful first half but built nicely in the second half.

Absolutely hated the crowds reaction to Elanga tonight. I thought he did well and made a difference, but the fans were moaning and groaning every time he did anything. That’s not support.

Yep, it was embarrassing. He really didn't do anything wrong except not sprint directly forward every time he received the ball. Silly, but has been the way for decades.

Nice to hear lots of Eddie Howe chants though.

A rare jaunt into the Leazes lower for me tonight. For all the grief the East gets at least the old timers in there know football for the most part. Buzzing the thick cunts behind me missed the winner.

Special mention to the fucking song police behind me when I started singing “who’s that team we call United?”

”Why sing that? I certainly see no fight in this team.  It doesn’t make sense.  It’s embarrassing.”

Daft cunt.  Just made me sing it louder next time.

Aye, that sort of diabolical shit is why I gave up going. Not surprised to hear it's still present and correct.

I'm amazed that the proportion of the crowd who only go because they expect constant television highlights entertainment haven't yet realised that's not how football works and they're wasting their money

I grew up when you were aloud to sing anything, you were part of a tribe, a crowd,my first real game was 76 league cup quarter final, the match was full of blokes and  proper fans.

Into the 80's and it was very tribal, the man in the street could queue for hours but he had a chance of getting in and he did, same at the away matches, we took thousand and they were all proper lads, tartan scarfs the lot.We drank, we sung, we all got tickets, its was an amazing era.

Fast forward now, its full of middle aged (im 57) wanna be millionaires who go for the status, corporate,no banter or singing as it seems not cool to sing now.

Its in the fans, you see it every now and then, but its tough to get it out these days, no idea why, jut sing ya fucking heart out man.

The football never ever had to get the fans going, it 100% has to now, its changed so much. People need to lose their inhibitions and remember they are part of a tribe ffs.

Until we give the man in the street the chance to get in home and away this is how football has evolved, mute.

Just my take on SJP, i last went 18 months ago.

For some. The sunderland game has totally undone the previous 4 years under Howe, apparently.

 wtf is wrong with these people, man?

I thought the atmosphere was OK but I am going in with seriously low expectations each game now. For a cup quarter final it wasn't the best.

Was in the East Stand with my wife and the shouting and balling from some owld pink gadgies at Murphy second half, and then Elanga, was out of hand. Murphy was getting shouted at for trying stuff then Elanga was getting shouted at for not trying stuff.

As others have said shouting at players is so counter-productive it's unreal. Elanga in particular must be thinking "I heard these fans were great, so I must be really shite". Embarrassing from our point of view.

We were knocking on the door the whole game, don't throw your toys out when we don't slice through them at will ffs.
